Journey of Hope.
Two Cork clergy members are preparing to begin a series of walks in Cork, Cloyne and Ross Diocese to raise funds to help displaced farmers and their families living in poverty in Sierra Leone. During May and June, Rev Tony Murphy of Carrigaline and Rev Andrew Coleman of Bandon will visit all 22 parishes in the Church of Ireland Diocese, raising awareness of the Christian Aid project that is helping the affected communities, walking with parishioners and accepting donations.
The Diocesan Appeal for Sierra Leone was launched by Bishop Paul Colton during the Cork Diocesan Synod in October 2024. It is a partnership with Christian Aid Ireland and the Bishop’s Appeal (the Church of Ireland’s World Development Fund). The money raised will support the work of Christian Aid and its local partner, the Sierra Leone Council of Churches, to help families rebuild their lives and find new sources of income after being forced from their farmland following the arrival of a huge palm oil plantation. The appeal has been named Liloma, which means ‘hope’ in the local Mende language.
There will be a walk from St. Matthew’s Baltimore on Tuesday 9th June from 2pm. At 2pm we will have a short video on the work that is supported, and then we will have a walk. (Distance and duration to be decided on the day).
