🚗 Travelling to the National Ploughing Championships? Plan your route before you set off!

Our 2026 Traffic Management Plan is available at www.npa.ie/traffic-management-plan, with information on the recommended routes to Screggan, Tullamore, Co. Offaly.

A few important tips before you travel:

• Plan ahead and allow extra time – expect delays.
• Follow the official directional signage when approaching the event and do not rely on GPS, as traffic will be managed along designated routes.
• If possible, carpool or travel by train and shuttle bus from Tullamore or Portarlington train stations.
• Event gates open at 9am and the event closes at 6pm. Visitors are not guaranteed access after 3pm, with entry gates closing at 4pm due to outbound traffic.
• Remember where you parked – take note of your car park number, colour or animal sign, drop a pin on your phone or take a photo of the sign.
• Have your ticket ready before arriving – either printed or with the barcode screenshotted on your phone for quicker scanning.

Saint Ciarán was an Irish monk, one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland, and a founder of the significant monastic center of Clonmacnoise in the 6th century. Known as Ciarán the Younger to distinguish him from another saint of the same name, he received his education from Saint Finnian at Clonard and later Saint Enda, before establishing his influential monastery on the River Shannon. His feast day is celebrated on September 9th.

The Closing of the Diocesan Process for the canonisation of Fr Willie Doyle will take place on Sunday 18th October at 4pm in The Cathedral of Christ the King in Mullingar . Due to Fr Willie's association with our parish , he having spent some years of his training in the Jesuit College in Rahan we hope that many from our parish will make a special effort to attend either by bus which we plan to organise or by car . Today, 9 September is the Patron Day of Saint Ciarán of Clonmacnoise.
He was one of the ‘Twelve Apostles of Ireland’ and the first abbot of Clonmacnoise. He is sometimes called Ciarán the Younger to distinguish him from the 5th-century Saint Ciarán the Elder who was bishop of Osraig.
Clonmacnoise was founded by St. Ciarán, who was born around 512. Clonmacnois later became one of the most influential monasteries in Europe.

Most glorious God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - we thank you for the lift of your servant St. Ciaran. By his example of fervent charity towards the poor, may we be ever more motivate to seek opportunities to help the downcast and lowly. Through his intercession as a miracle worker, may you grant relief to all the sick and suffering; blessing with hope, all those who despair. may St. Ciarán, ” a lamp blazing with the light of wisdom.” intercede on our behalf; bringing grace to the faithful and glory toy our holy name.
