Some flowers for the feast of the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary -8th September.
We sang the beautiful hymn, “When creation was begun, God had chosen you to be Mother of his blessed Son, Holy Mary, full of grace.”
Mary travelled the path of human existence with all its darkness and pain. May she trace in our hearts her readiness of faith.

In today’s Gospel Matt. 18. 15+ we see an emphasis on the power of community. Jesus says, “Where two or three meet in my name, I will be there with them.” It is very difficult to remain a Christian or even a believer in today’s secular world in isolation from others. We need support. This is where community comes in. Through the community we support one another. We can created a current that supports others. This week I may be feeling apathetic. Let me not be afraid to yield myself to the current and be carried. Next week I may be feeling enthusiastic and then I can help to carry someone. We minister to one another by travelling together, listening to and learning from one another.

Our home grown tomatoes --- heirlooms hot from the sun have invaded our kitchen bringing their unique smell, fiery colour and delicious flavour.
Lord, we are grateful for this mouth-watering summer treat.

Today’s Gospel Matt. 16.21 invites us to ponder on what commitment to Jesus involves and on what it may cost. It is never easy to bear witness in the face of hostility and this is a struggle we all experience in some shape or form. There are things we don’t like doing, but which we have to do. Being committed to following Jesus is a serious business and suffering will inevitably be part of Christian life. Our following of Jesus can be small steps. It means being faithful to one’s way of life, concern for others, the kind word. There can be much heroism in ordinary life as we get opportunities to die to self in little ways every day. Even “little everyday saints” cause the vision of a higher and purer life to rise up before us and through them the warmth of God’s love radiates through the world.

Often I find myself trying to do three jobs at the same time! If we look to nature we see that it takes spring, summer, autumn, blossoms, bees sunshine and rain to create a single apple. Anything forced is not whole, we need patience and time.

In today’s Gospel Matt. 16.13 we have an example of an opinion poll and we see that people come up with a variety of answers . The poll was conducted by Jesus himself. The main question was: “Who is this man Jesus?” It is important for us to come up with our own answers – to be able to state our beliefs and Christian values and to make the faith or own. Here we see Peter saying to Jesus. “You are the Christ, Son of the living God” but later the same Peter says, “I do not know this Jesus.” Like all of us there was division within Peter. We too blow hot and cold but we must not let our low moments pull us down. If Jesus is the Son of the living God for me – how does this affect the way I live? “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day your find out why?”(Mark Twain)
