The 3rd of June is the feast of Saint Kevin, founder and first Abbott of Glendalough

A native of Leinster he felt called to be a hermit. He went in search of a quiet place to discover God within himself and in nature around him

He felt called to live in harmony with nature, he had a love of animals, he desired solitude and the pursuit of the ascetical life

When he discovered the beautiful valley of Glendalough he decided to settle there. News of his life as a hermit spread and gradually disciples began to gather round him

Over time the monastic settlement grew and developed, becoming a place of education, pilgrimage and spirituality which lasted nearly 600 years

It is said that Kevin remained so still during prayer that one day as he stood with his arms outstretched in praise of God a blackbird came and laid her egg in the palm of his hand

Kevin being respectful of creation didn’t move until the egg was hatched

The little lake right at the entrance to the Celtic Garden at IOSAS Centre is dedicated to Saint Kevin and is an ideal place to pause, look around and get a first glimpse of this beautiful place

Lord speak to us in the silence of our hearts

May we find a place to rest a while each day in your presence and find peace
