The one true God (Isaiah 45-48, 1 Cor 13)

Imagine a man having to tell his wife that he is her husband. Tragically, there are reasons why she may have had her doubts, the way he's treated her, or memory loss. But imagine he had always treated her well, and he has to remind her because of the way she's acting. God has always been the perfect God to His people, yet they have forsaken Him so much that time and again He has to remind them, because they have been turning to idols....

Why is there no need to fear? (Isaiah 41-44; 1 Cor 12)

Why is there no need to fear? Surely there are things that frighten us? Things we fear for ourselves or our loved ones? How can we not fear as we see our loved ones getting weaker? How can God say to His people “fear not”? We have reached a wonderful part of Isaiah. Whilst chapters 1-39 contain some wonderful promises, they are largely full of judgment....

People sometimes say “your health is your wealth.” And whilst there is great blessing in being healthy, we should never make our health the ultimate thing. Alone, yet not alone (Isaiah 36-37; Ps 123; 1 Cor 10)

Yesterday we saw the pain of Hezekiah as he faced the contempt of Sennacherib. Today's reading from Isaiah retells the same event from Isaiah’s perspective and our Psalm perhaps expresses words that Hezekiah would have used as he faced Sennacherib’s scorn. An impossible rescue (2 Kings 18-19; 2 Chr 32; Ps 67; 1 Cor 9)

Humanly speaking, there was no way out. Sennacherib, King of Assyria has wiped out many nations, (including the northern kingdom of Israel) and he is now threatening Judah (the southern kingdom). He has more soldiers and better weapons, what hope is there for Judah? The surprise is that this is happening when a godly king, Hezekiah is on the throne. Living a godly life doesn’t keep you free from trouble in this world, but it does mean that you have someone to turn to when trouble comes....

The difference a godly man makes (2 Chr 29-31; 1 Corinthians 8)

After the wickedness of King Ahaz, God's grace shines all the brighter through his godly son Hezekiah. It can only be God's grace that causes such a change in this family, and we see what a difference a godly man can make.
