Life is messy (Proverbs 14-15; Rom 14)

Life is messy. We might wish it wasn’t, we might want everything clean and tidy and orderly, but the reality is, it won't be long until it is messy again. There is wisdom in accepting that. I find this proverb from today’s reading helpful: “Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox.” (Proverbs 14:4)...

Where do you find your value? (Proverbs 11-13; Psalm 8; Rom 13)

As exam season and pride month continue it may be tempting to look to academic success or your sexuality for your identity. Psalm 8 helps us to look somewhere else. It's a wonderful God focussed Psalm, beginning and ending with the majesty of God. It is in looking to the God of the Bible that we can discover who we are, that we are first of all creatures!...

Do not be conformed to this world (Proverbs 8-10; Psalm 144; Rom 12)

June is pride month. There's lots of pressure to conform, it's much easier to just go with the flow. But in our reading today God says, “do not be conformed to this world” (Romans 12:2). If you follow Jesus, you're not to just go with the flow, but to go God's way. Sometimes our light and momentary troubles come because we live in a fallen world, other times they come because we are living differently as Christians....

The justice of God (Proverbs 6-7; Psalm 7; Rom 11)

If you have ever been wronged, you will know that justice matters. In Psalm 7, David has been wronged. A man called Cush has falsely accused David of something and it's ruining David. He feels like he's being torn apart like the prey of a lion (v2). David does the best thing, he cries out to God and leaves it with God to sort out the injustice....

The heart of God (Proverbs 3-5; Romans 10)

We saw yesterday that if you love God, it's because He chose to have mercy on you. In Romans 10 we see the heart of God for unbelieving people as God says “all day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.” (V21). God has been so patient, think of His treatment of Israel, He rescued them out of Egypt, and how long is it until they are grumbling!...

How can we know God’s love won’t fail? (1 Kings 4; Prov 1-2; Ps 43; Rom 9)

Yesterday we saw the amazing news of total security for the believer in Christ. But maybe you look at your suffering and you wonder, how can God love you when He lets this happen? Our Psalmist wrestles with this in Psalm 43. Graciously God gives us the words to say when we feel like this, we can say (or sing), “why have you rejected me?” That's what it feels like....

Total security (1 Kings 3; 2 Chr 1; Ps 42; Rom 8)

Could this be the best chapter in the whole Bible?! Romans 8 begins with “no condemnation” and ends with the confidence that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. It’s a chapter that fills us with confidence of the total security for the believer in Christ Jesus. Who are the blessings of this chapter for? They are for all who are “in Christ” - v1 tells us there is “no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.” Those “in Christ Jesus” means all those who have put their trust in Jesus....

Do not read this! (1 Kings 2; 1 Chr 29; Rom 7)

“Do not read this!” Why does that make you want to read this? Or why when you see a “Wet Paint! Don't Touch” sign do you want to touch it! The thought of touching the wall before reading the sign wouldn’t have crossed your mind, but once you see a command telling you not to, you want to! Does that make the sign bad?...
