We are delighted this week to have completed the new devotional shrine to Our Lady of Győr, Consoler of the Afflicted, in Galway Cathedral.

The story of this image reaches back to the seventeenth century. Bishop Walter Lynch of Clonfert, a native of Galway who was forced into exile, eventually found refuge in Győr in Hungary, bringing with him an image of the Madonna and Child. After his death there in 1663, the image was placed in Győr Cathedral.

On the morning of Saint Patrick’s Day, 17 March 1697, while Mass was being celebrated, witnesses reported that the image began to shed tears of blood. The weeping continued for several hours. From that event grew a devotion which has endured for more than three centuries, and the image became known as Our Lady of Győr, Consoler of the Afflicted.

The devotion has become a particular bond between the Church in Győr and our own Dioceses here in the west of Ireland. The new shrine gives the image a permanent place in the Cathedral and recalls the remarkable story which first joined our Churches across the distance between Ireland and Hungary.

We look forward with great joy to the Solemn Enshrinement of the Image of Our Lady of Győr and the Blessing of the Devotional Shrine during Holy Mass on Sunday, 4 October 2026, at 6.00pm.

All are warmly invited to join us for this special celebration and to seek the maternal intercession of Our Lady of Győr, Consoler of the Afflicted.

“We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You, because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world.” ✝️

Today, 14 September, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

The Cross, once a sign of suffering and death, became through Christ a sign of victory, hope and salvation. It reminds us of the immeasurable love of Jesus, who gave Himself for us and transformed the Cross into the path to eternal life.

Today, let us look upon the Holy Cross with gratitude and faith, remembering the sacrifice made for each one of us.

We adore Your Cross, O Lord, and we praise and glorify Your holy Resurrection. 🙏

A thought for today

Today we celebrate the Exaltation of the Cross.

A cross in the time of Jesus was a brutal public instrument of death and torture.

To see one would send shivers down your spine.

So, why did the early Christians begin to exalt the Cross of Christ?

Firstly, we rejoice that something so terrible should have been transformed into a means of redemption for the whole human race.

Only God could do that!

Secondly, we remind ourselves of the fact that Christianity is not an abstract and spiritual religion.

It springs from God’s direct intervention in the affairs of the world, a real historical event involving real people and, in the end, a real ex*****on on a real cross.

Thirdly, Christ overcame the Cross.

Love conquers hatred, death, violence and sin.

The Cross was a means to show this, not an end in itself.

God was in full control on Good Friday.

Perhaps you can meditate on these beautiful words from St John's Gospel today:
