Cllr Glen Moore's recent social media post concerning the proposed community facility in North Clondalkin raises serious concerns, both in terms of factual accuracy and the tone and language used when referring to a faith community. (See the first comment for link to Cllr Glen Moore post)
It is essential to clearly separate planning matters, which are governed by law, evidence, and professional assessment, from personal ideological views about religion, which have no place in the planning process and should never be used to generate fear, hostility, or division within society.

Planning applications are assessed by South Dublin County Council on the basis of detailed technical documentation, including traffic impact assessments, noise controls, site management plans, zoning compliance, and public safety considerations.
They are not determined by social media commentary, petitions, door-to-door canvassing claims, or commentary on religious beliefs.
Several assertions made in the post, including claims relating to attendance figures, noise levels, sound amplification, internal practices, and facilities do not reflect the contents of the submitted planning documentation. These statements give the clear impression that the planning file has not been fully or accurately reviewed.
Members of the public are, of course, entitled to make observations or objections; however, such submissions should be grounded in verifiable planning considerations, not speculation or misinformation.

Equally concerning are the sweeping and inflammatory statements made about Islam and Muslims.
Irish Muslims live under, respect, and abide by Irish law. They do not seek to replace Irelandโs legal system, nor do they operate outside it. Claims suggesting otherwise are factually incorrect and perpetuate harmful and misleading stereotypes.
Allegations regarding gender practices, religious law, treatment of minorities, or criminal behaviour are generalised, decontextualised, and misleading, and are entirely irrelevant to a planning application for a local community facility.
Suggesting that a religion or its followers โdo not belong in Irelandโ is particularly troubling. Ireland is a constitutional democracy that explicitly protects freedom of religion, equality before the law, and peaceful assembly. Muslim communities enjoy the same legal rights as every other faith group in the country.
The language used in this post raises serious concerns under accepted standards relating to hate speech and the incitement of hostility toward a protected group.

When an elected representative describes a religion as โbackwardโ or โbarbaricโ, or calls the verses of a religious Holy Book as โgarbageโ, and makes unsubstantiated claims about an identifiable community, it risks legitimising hostility and fear toward ordinary, law-abiding people, including families and children who live locally.
Such rhetoric is deeply irresponsible and carries a real risk of provoking hostile responses, escalating tensions, and compromising the safety and wellbeing of peaceful citizens.
Public representatives have a heightened duty to exercise restraint, accuracy, and responsibility, and to promote calm, respectful civic engagement, not to inflame emotions or stigmatise communities.
Concerns regarding traffic, noise, or infrastructure must be addressed through the statutory planning system, where evidence can be assessed professionally, objectively, and transparently.

The statements made in the post are being formally documented. Legal advice is being sought regarding the dissemination of false information and the promotion of hostile narratives by an elected official.
In parallel, formal complaints will be submitted to the relevant authorities and oversight bodies. This is not about suppressing debate or preventing lawful objections. It is about ensuring that public discourse, particularly when conducted by those in positions of authority, remains factual, lawful, responsible, and respectful.

Ireland is a diverse society built on fairness, dignity, and equal rights. Muslim communities, like all others, have the lawful right to apply for planning permission and to practise their faith without being subjected to misrepresentation, hostility, or discriminatory rhetoric.
