CONGRATULATIONS to the “girls in blue” from St. Enda’s national school, Lisdoonvarna, for a great football win recently!

POPE LEO’S RECENT VISIT TO SPAIN was a huge success thank God. The Corpus Christi Mass and procession in Madrid were just beautiful, with the carpets of flowers, a lovely Spanish tradition. If anyone would like to donate flowers for our altars during the summer they would be received with gratitude. Here’s some of what Pope Leo said: “it is not merely a matter of bringing out the monstrance, but of allowing ourselves to be brought out of our selfishness and indifference, of a comfortable, private faith, so as to respond to his invitation to conversion, to change our perspective, and to welcome his presence which transforms us and makes us builders of a new world. May the Lord Jesus, present in the Eucharist, transform you into bread that is broken, given, and offered, so that a life of fulness may spring forth for you, your families, and your country.”

NATIONAL SYNODAL ASSEMBLY IN OCTOBER: preparations are underway for this process of trying to discern together and listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit so as to discover where and how God is leading us as a Church here in Ireland. Priorities identified include outreach to youth, developing opportunities for education and catechesis in our faith, care for the earth, and opportunities for lay involvement and ministry. Fr. Declan Hurley and Patricia Carroll from the National Synodal Pathway have recorded an interesting interview on:
theway.ie/the-irish-synodal-pathway-progress-and-purpose

CATHOLIC FAMILY RETREAT: O’Donoghue’s Campsite, Fanore, July 4th-11th, on the theme of God’s promises: “do not be afraid for I am with you, I have called you by your name, you are mine.” (Isaiah 43).

SURVEY ON CATHOLIC SCHOOL PATRONAGE: we do not have all the results back yet, but so far 68% of parents surveyed in St. Enda’s national school, Lisdoonvarna, wish to continue under Catholic patronage, while 65% was the result for Doolin NS.

WORKS UPDATE ON ST. AUGUSTINE’S CHURCH, KILSHANNY, AND KILSHANNY PARISH HALL are on the accompanying sheet. Thank you to John O’Loughlin, Chair, Parish Finance Committee for preparing this information.

Father Declan Hurley & Patricia Carroll, discuss the progress made by the seven working groups and explain the purpose and significance of the upcoming National Synodal Assembly

NEXT CHILDREN’S ROSARY: Sunday, June 7th, 6pm, Corpus Christi church, Lisdoonvarna. We congratulate our parishioner Moya Moloney who represented our parish by leading the third decade of the Rosary at the national Rosary rally in Knock on Saturday. We are so proud of her, and indeed of all Our Lady’s young friends.

MAINTENANCE OF CHURCH GROUNDS IN SUMMER: sincere thanks to Pat Kennelly for volunteering to keep the church lawn cut at St. Augustine’s church, Kilshanny. I have contracted Jason Howley to do so for the church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Toovahera, and Kilmoon cemetery.

BISHOP MICHAEL’S MESSAGE FOR EXAM STUDENTS: please read the full, inspiring message on either the parish website or the diocesan one. It includes these words: “God will be there with you to calm those nerves, to help you in ways you might not expect, and most of all, to give you the gift of perspective. No exam, no matter how important, can ever define you. You are much more than any exam, and much more important in God’s eyes than any grade you might receive.”

A PRAYER WRITTEN AFTER A RETREAT ENTITLED “What the Eucharist means to me.”: Eucharistic Jesus, Lord of my life, open the eyes of my heart. My faith is meant to be more than a private, personal comfort-zone for just the two of us, to make me feel good. Let me not fall into the trap of spiritual superiority and the need to correct others. Make my heart kind and humble, a truly Eucharistic heart that is self-forgetful, all-embracing, and grateful for everyone and everything. At my baptism, when you poured your Holy Spirit into me, you sent me out on the mission to make the connection between what I do and say in the church, and how I treat others. Don’t let me be so focused on You in the Eucharist that I can’t see You in my brother or sister, especially in the hungry, the sick, and the hopeless. Mary, mother of the Eucharist, intercede for us. Amen.

FROM O Bread of Heaven by St. Alphonsus Liguori: O bread of heaven beneath this veil, thou dost my very God conceal. My Jesus dearest treasure hail, I love thee and adoring kneel. Each loving soul by thee is fed, with thine own self, in form of bread.

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL NEWS: the PPC met earlier this month. The introduction of lay funeral ministers was discussed, and this is in progress. It is Bishop Michael’s wish that, in the autumn, we will have a joint PPC for our two parishes. The present PPC in Lisdoonvarna/Kilshanny parish comes to a natural end at that time anyway as their four-year term will be up. Sincere thanks to them for their service. There will be another inter-diocesan gathering of PPC’s on Saturday, October 10th. Meanwhile, in the spirit of synodality, we agreed a mission-statement: United in Christ and guided by the Gospel, we walk together as brothers and sisters, striving to embody God’s love by creating a spiritual home and a safe, inclusive community in which all are welcomed, valued, and supported to grow and flourish in God’s grace.”
Bishop Michael plans to meet the priests of the North Clare deanery (Frs. Ned and Denis Crosby, Fr. Richard Flanagan, and myself), on June 11th.

NATIONAL GRANDPARENTS’ PILGRIMAGE TO KNOCK: Sunday, July 26th, celebrating the world day for Grandparents and the elderly. We thank the Lord for these wonderful handers-on of the faith. Pope Leo’s theme for this year is “I will never forget you” (Isaiah 49:15). So often it’s the grandparents who keep the faith alive in their grandchildren, bringing them to Mass and talking to them about the Lord.

ALL-IRELAND ROSARY RALLY IN KNOCK, SATURDAY, JUNE 6TH: to reserve a seat on the bus, contact Lourda on 087 2237191. This will be a wonderful day with activities for all ages. Speakers will include Fr. Chris Alar, Nikki Kingsley, who will talk about her journey from Islam to Catholicism, Dana, Christine O’ Hara, a young teacher who promotes the praying of the Rosary in schools, and Sr. Angela, who is promoter of the cause for the canonisation of Sr. Lucia of Fatima, the childhood companion of Saints Jacinta and Francisco. Incidentally, I would heartily recommend the book Fatima in Lucia’s Own Words. The section when she recalls their prayerful preparation at home the night before First Holy Communion is particularly beautiful and calls us back to Who should be at the centre of this celebration!

LEAVING AND JNR CERT: every blessing to those facing exams in the coming weeks. Remember what Pope Leo said recently about AI: that, wonderful thought it is, it cannot replace a unique and beautiful human being, made in the image and likeness of God. You are that person. Exams do not define you. Just do your best and leave the rest on Our Lady’s hands. Also, pray to St. Joseph of Cupertino.

NEXT CHILDREN’S ROSARY: Corpus Christi Church, Lisdoonvarna, Sunday, June 7th at 6pm.

ST. AUGUSTINE’S CHURCH, KILSHANNY: thank you for your feedback recently. Having consulted with Fergus Merriman, a chartered building surveyor specialising in heritage buildings and approved by Clare County Council and Galway/Kilfenora diocese, and Ger Guerin of Guerin and Considine, also approved to deal with heritage buildings, the Parish Finance Committee has decided to proceed with the re-sanding, repair, restoration, and varnishing of the original floor. Both Fergus and Ger worked with us and CCC on the restoration and repair of the roof of Corpus Christi church, Lisdoonvarna. It is envisaged that there will still be carpet on the main aisle of the church and across the area in front of the altar-rails.

NATIONAL SYNODAL PATHWAY: this new way of faith-renewal was begun by Pope Francis a number of years ago. It envisages clergy and laity walking the road of faith together, being open to learning from each-other, and, in the light of the Holy Spirit, discerning together where God is leading us in these days, trying to discover to whom and in what areas we should particularly focus our evangelization-outreach. Each Diocese has a synodal team, and gleaned from gatherings of Parish Pastoral Councils and other such events, is to send a report to Rome by September, reflecting the felt needs and opinions of Church members. There will be a National Synodal Assembly later this year with representatives from each diocese. It is hoped that in the near future, each diocese would hold a synod. For more clarity and information, just google Baptised and Sent, the official guiding document of the synod. Also, check out TheWay.ie portal, which has interviews with Julianne Moran, who is leading the process.
My name is gossip, I have no respect for justice, I main without killing. I break hearts and ruin lives. I am cunning and malicious and gather strength with age. The more I am quoted the more I am believed. My victims are helpless, they cannot protect themselves, because I have no name, no face. To track me down is impossible. The harder you try, the more elusive I become. I am nobody’s friend. Once I tarnish a reputation it is never the same. I topple governments and wreck marriages, I ruin careers, I cause sleepless nights, heartache, and indigestion. I make innocent people cry into their pillows at night. Even my name hisses. My name is gossip. I make headlines and heartaches. So before you repeat a story, ask yourself: is it true, harmless, necessary, and if not, don’t!

TOWARDS A PROPER RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION: the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that only baptised Catholics in a state of grace (having made a good Confession-the Friary is a good place for it!), should receive Holy Communion. That includes myself, Fr. Robert. People are welcome to receive either on the tongue, kneeling, or in the hand, standing. The correct response to “the Body of Christ” is a loud and enthusiastic “Amen!” (meaning, yes Jesus I really believe it’s you, I don’t take you for granted, I can do nothing without your grace and help, if I think anything else, I’m fooling myself, and I’m delighted and honoured that you would come to a poor sinner like me.) Then, before walking away, please place the Sacred Host in your mouth. Please do not walk away with the Sacred Host in your hand.

PRAY FOR LIFE NOVENA, May 23rd-31st: online at prayforlife.ie and National Pilgrimage for life in Knock on Saturday, June 20th, hosted by the Irish Bishop’s Conference, councilforlife.ie

Please don’t forget our fellow-Christians in the Holy Land: on this Saturday, May 16th, Bishop William Shomali from Bethlehem will speak in Knock in St. John’s Centre at 11am, and later at Holy Mass at 3pm. Bishop William has recently visited Gaza twice and says that, while it might be no longer prominent in the news, the suffering there continues. Let’s keep praying for peace there, and that someday soon we will get to visit.

Recently we have celebrated the 40 days of Lent and are now coming towards the end of the 50 days of the Easter season, as this weekend we remember the Ascension of the Lord and prepare for the sending of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost a week later. True friends keep their promises. This weekend, before ascending to His Father and sending us His Holy Spirit, Jesus says: “I am with you always, even till the end of time.” How does He keep this promise? By giving us His very self in the Blessed Eucharist as food for the journey of life, and by pouring His Holy Spirit into us at our Baptism and Confirmation, the very same Spirit that rose Him from the dead. What an honour, and what a wonderful promise it is that we share in: we too will live forever! This should help us put into perspective who and what is really important in life.

ST. AUGUSTINE’S CHURCH, KILSHANNY: in the winter statement to parishioners, from the Parish Finance Committee, the work to be completed at St. Augustine’s Church was outlined. The following is an update for your information and consideration:
- The tarmac has been laid and has been well-received.
- Two new public lights have been erected.
- Further work is to be completed on the external doors.
- The apse, to the right side of the church, is to be painted during the summer, along with the arch over the high altar.
- The carpet has been removed to assess the condition of the pine floor. Repairs to the floor, where it is compromised, to be carried out. The Finance Committee wish to ascertain the views of the faith community of Kilshanny whether to (1) recarpet entirely or (2) restore the old pine floorboards, with carpet laid along the aisle.
- A small section of the plaster at the back of the altar has been removed and, to our delight, exposes stonework of good quality. Feel free to come up and have a look yourself. The Finance Committee has the option of (1) removing the plaster and returning the back and both sides of the altar to the original stonework of 1893, applying two coats of micro porous sealer or (2) now that it has dried out, painting it during the summer. We are advised that with option (2) it will have be repainted every couple of years.
- The church windows are in need of repair and restoration. As already advised, a grant of euro 20,000 has been sanctioned for this work under the Built Heritage Investment Grant 2026, for which we are very grateful to Clare County Council and the Department of Housing, Local Government, and Heritage. Tenders are now sought for this work by applying to Fr. Robert at [email protected]
- No decision has been made on upgrading the boiler.

Thank you to their families, teachers, SNA’s, and all who have prepared them. With the world the way it is at the moment, God knows, faith in the Good Lord is all we’ve got!

BURREN SLOW FOOD FESTIVAL: the Pavilion, Lisdoonvarna, Sunday, May 10th.

THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR LADY’S HOLY ROSARY: Sr. Lucia of Fatima said that there’s no problem, however intractable, that cannot be solved by praying the rosary, and in Medjugorje, Our Lady said that the rosary can even stop wars. Wouldn’t it be a lovely thing if, for the month of May, we committed as families to praying one decade of the rosary every night for world peace? I have no doubt that it would have a powerful effect.
A little pair of rosary beads, as plain as plain can be, but only God in heaven knows how dear they are to me. I have them always with me at every step I take, at evening when I slumber, at morn when I awake. In bright and cloudy weather, in sunshine or in rain, in happiness or sorrow, in pleasure or in pain. It helps me in my struggle, it reproves me when I sin, its look of gentle patience rebukes the strife within. In days of pain and anguish, the greatest help I knew was to hold on to my rosary beads, until I calmer grew.

Join us at the All Ireland Rosary Rally in Knock and experience the power of prayer. Register now and be part of a global movement.
