Colmcille was born on December 7, 521 in Gartan, near Lough Gartan in Co. Donegal.

He was also known as Columba, which is the Latin form of Colum. The 'cille' suffix added to his name means 'of the churches'.

On his father's side, he was the great-great-grandson of the famous Niall of the Nine Hostages, a 5th-century Irish high king. The modern village of Glencolmcille in Donegal is named in his honor.

Colmcille began his journey in the priesthood at age 20, studying at Clonard Abbey, located on the River Boyne in present-day County Meath.

Within ten years, he established around 30 monasteries, inspiring many through his personal holiness. He was also a scholar, composing hymns and transcribing over 300 books and manuscripts.

Colmcille died on Iona and was buried there in 597 by his monks in the abbey he founded.

In 794, Vikings attacked Iona, plundering many of the relics Colmcille had collected during his life as an intellectual. Along with being one of Ireland's three patron saints, St. Colmcille is also the patron saint of Derry, where he established a monastic settlement in 540 AD.

Pope Leo has arrived in Barcelona and makes his first visit to Jesus in the Eucharist.

Upon entering a church, a bishop traditionally venerates the crucifix, blesses the church with holy water, and visits the Blessed Sacrament. It's a beautiful Catholic custom for all of us: whenever we arrive in a new town, city, or country, to first stop and greet Our Lord in the tabernacle.
