Pope Leo XIV said that the diversity of the world’s peoples should never be seen as a threat, but as a gift capable of enriching humanity. During his General Audience, he warned that division and confrontation, which can lead to violence, are rooted in sin and weaken authentic human relationships. Reflecting on Gaudium et Spes, the Pope called for reciprocity, solidarity, and responsibility in building the common good. He also cautioned against allowing algorithms to replace decisions that belong to human conscience, urging Christians to foster deeper, more personal relationships grounded in the dignity of every person.

A SPECIAL DAY FOR THE DIOCESE OF DERRY

This Sunday marks an important and joyful occasion in the life of our Diocese as The Most Reverend Michael Router is installed as Bishop of Derry in Saint Eugene’s Cathedral, Derry.

Priests, religious and people from across the Diocese will gather with Bishop Michael’s family, friends and representatives of the wider Church for the Mass of Installation on Sunday 20 September at 3.00 pm.

We warmly invite everyone who cannot be present in the Cathedral to join us online and share in this special occasion.

Patron Day of St Molaise of Devenish
12 September
Saint Molaise (also known as Laisrén mac Nad Froích) was a 6th-century Irish monastic leader who founded a famous monastery on Devenish Island in Lough Erne around 530 AD. A key figure of early Celtic Christianity, he made Devenish a renowned center of learning and pilgrimage. According to Irish tradition, he was also famously connected to Saint Columba, giving the judgment that sent Columba into exile to Iona.

Pope Leo, speaking yesterday in his first public remarks on the September 11 attacks as pope, Pope Leo XIV remembered the victims 25 years after the tragedy.

“I renew my prayers for those who lost their lives and for those who continue to bear the wounds of that tragic day,” he said after Sunday’s Angelus, before calling on the world to pray for peace.

The words echo a message Robert Francis Prevost gave just 10 days after 9/11. Newly elected prior general of the Augustinians, he warned against revenge, saying: “Augustinians must bear witness to the Gospel and to its values of unity, dialogue, peace, and reconciliation.”

Twenty-five years later, his message remains one of prayer, reconciliation and peace.

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Exultation of the Holy Cross
The feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross celebrates two historical events: the discovery of the True Cross by Saint Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, in 320 under the temple of Venus in Jerusalem, and the dedication in 335 of the basilica and shrine built on Calvary by Constantine, which mark the site of the Crucifixion.
It became a universal celebration within the Church, starting in Rome and subsequently spreading throughout the entire empire, and has been celebrated annually on September 14 ever since.
The Cross is a cruel instrument of torture and death. The fact that it is now the symbol of God’s perfect love only further magnifies that love and showcases God’s infinite power to use the worst for the best: to use death to bring life and to transform the greatest act of cruelty ever known into the greatest act of mercy ever bestowed upon the world.
