Marking Mission Sunday 23 October

The following article was published in the Irish Catholic on the 20th October 2022. The newspaper published a number of articles to mark mission Sunday on the 23 October 2022.

Fr. Dan Carroll Mission Sunday Supplement In Italy from the late 19th century, poverty-stricken young people had been gravitating to the cities seeking employment. Turin already had a large unemployed youth cohort and this influx from the countryside caused immense challenges. It was in this context...

Sunday # Tomb

Early on Sunday morning the women went to Jesus’s tomb, hoping to enter and prepare Jesus for a proper burial. Instead, they found the tomb opened and met two men in white clothes who said; ‘Why look among the dead for someone who is alive? Jesus is not here; he is risen from the dead.”

The women were shocked and immediately set off to tell the disciples. Death had been overcome. It would take the disciples some time to understand what had happened. God had proven his fidelity to humankind. Jesus, the one who had been crucified and seemingly abandoned by his Father, had been risen from dead by God the Father.

Friday

The crucifixion was one of the worst forms of ex*****on ever known. Jesus, the Son of God embraced the very depths of human misery and suffering to raise up our humanity. In Jesus, divinity descended to the most hopeless point a man or woman can be. The crucifixion was meant to end the existence of the crucified person. Jesus surrendered to this cross, and with love transformed it. The cross is now the symbol of our great hope.

Lord, help us understand what you did on the cross

Sunday of God

Jesus, our Redeemer goes to Jerusalem to fulfill the Holy Scriptures and to be hung on the cross, the wooden throne from which he will reign forever attracting the humanity of all times and offering to everyone the gift of redemption. Pope Francis

From the cross, Jesus reveals the true face of God, which is mercy. He forgives those who are crucifying him, he opens the gates of paradise to the repentant thief, and touches the heart of the centurion. Poe Francis

Lord Jesus, have mercy on us, sinners.

Napoleon and the Mother

One day a mother went to plead with Napoleon for her son’s life. He committed an offence for which the death sentence was the punishment. Napoleon was determined to ensure that justice would be done. But the mother insisted, ‘Your Excellency, I have come to ask for mercy not justice.’ ‘But he does not deserve mercy,’ Napoleon answered. ‘Your Excellency,’ said the mother, ‘it would not be mercy if he deserved it.’ ‘So be it,’ said Napoleon. ‘I will have mercy on him.’ The woman’s son was set free.

Lent – Meeting God our Father

The parable of the Prodigal Son tells the story about a father who saw his errant Son returning home. He was moved with pity, ran to meet him, took him in his arms and kissed him tenderly. This is the God who in Jesus became a human being and revealed his infinite love for us.

Father, help us to be your children who put our absolute trust in you.
