There is no one cause of addiction. No one can completely predict who will become addicted after substance abuse and who will not. The intense physical, mental, and financial demands of sports culture can sometimes trigger addiction, whether to performance-enhancing substances, alcohol, or sports gambling.

Elite athletes often face immense pressure to cope with injuries, emotional lows, and performance anxiety, which can lead to substance misuse. The intersection of sports and betting has created a significant crisis for both athletes and fans leading to sports betting addictions.

Addictions to the Internet and mobile phones are also growing. Faith provides a powerful framework for navigating the pressures of sports and overcoming the grip of addiction. Learn more tonight.

Having faith as a young person means intentionally making spirituality your own rather than just following in the footsteps of others. It involves navigating doubts, establishing personal habits, and finding a supportive community while staying grounded in what you believe.

Transitioning from the faith you were taught as a child to a conviction you own personally is a major milestone. Questioning and exploring answers is a completely normal and healthy part of this spiritual growth.Developing Habits such as personal prayer, reflecting on scripture, or spending time in silence consistently nurtures your faith through simple routines to build a strong spiritual foundation.

Never underestimate your influence and the influence of others. Grandparents and parents are important. What you say and more importantly do speak volumes.

Today we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi also known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, a liturgical solemnity celebrating the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Every time we receive Holy Communion we receive the Body of Christ.

At tonight’s Novena Sharon will talk about Trócaire, an International Non-Governmental Organisation (INGO), who work with local partners in the world’s most at-risk communities and with people in Ireland to tackle the underlying causes of poverty and injustice and respond to the crises they create.

Last year your support for Trócaire brought relief and hope to over 2.13 million people around the world. Humanitarian emergency programmes supported 1,492,653 people directly across Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East last year. 309,447 women
across the world were supported directly by their Women’s Empowerment programmes.

There are 31 Chapters in the book of Proverbs, approximately 800 individual proverbs spread across 915 verses and over 3,000 total proverbs mentioned throughout Scripture. These short sayings capture timeless wisdom about life, faith, justice, and the fear of the Lord.

The Book of Proverbs is not the work of a single author, there were multiple contributors over several centuries with many attributed to wise King Solomon, credited with writing the vast majority of the book (Chapters 1–9, 10–22, and 25–29). The Bible notes he wrote 3,000 proverbs.

Aoife will talk about The Reality of Suffering - no-one gets through life without some troubles. The Bible does not promise a trouble-free life. Jesus explicitly stated, "In this world you will have trouble". The focus shifts from "why is this happening to me?” to "how can I trust God through it?"

Even when you stumble, God's promise is to uphold you with His hand. Tests and trials are often framed as opportunities for spiritual growth and a deepening of your reliance on Him.

One of the biggest examples of faith is Job in the Bible. Once a respected community elder, Job became an outcast. In a single day, a severe windstorm collapsed the house where all ten of his grown children are dining, killing them all. His oxen, donkeys, sheep, and camels are stolen by raiding bands or destroyed by fire, and Satan struck Job with loathsome, itchy, and painful boils. He thought his 3 closest friends came to comfort him but instead accused him of harbouring hidden sins. They argued that his calamities were just punishments from God.

While some hold fast to the Book of Job being a historical event, many believe its placement before the book of Psalms in the wisdom literature genre hints that Job stands for a composite of people. God rewarded Job’s perseverance by granting him double his previous wealth, ten new children, and a long, prosperous life.

Traditionally we think of missionaries as serving abroad and there are many who did and still do. Fr Raphael will tell us about being a missionary priest in Ireland presently.

Every Christian is called to live a "missional" life, sharing the love of Christ within their everyday spheres of influence. The word “missionary” means somebody who is sent. And we’re all sent, we’re all drawn into Christ and we’re sent out by Christ to live in the world as witnesses to Christ. We do that with all of the gifts He’s given to us. Find out more tonight.

The tradition of blessing ourselves passing a church when we don’t have time to visit goes back many years. Also 3 Hail Mary's for the Holy Souls when passing a graveyard.

It is said that whenever St. Francis of Assisi, whose 800 anniversary of his death is 3rd October this year, or one of his followers passed by a church or even saw a church tower in the distance they would stop, kiss the ground and pray the following prayer.

The more used version is “We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy Cross you have redeemed the world" written by Saint Francis of Assisi in the 13th century. Do you bless yourself passing a church?
