CORK’S LIVING TREASURE – OUR NATIVE PLANTS AND ANIMALS

June is one of Cork's most abundant months. Foxglove towers in purple spires along our roadsides while honeysuckle breathes its evening scent through the hedgerows. Above Kinsale's rooftops, the swift screams through summer skies — a bird that sleeps, feeds and mates entirely on the wing.

Off our coastline, basking sharks glide through sunlit waters and bottlenose dolphins arc through the harbour. Fox cubs venture from their dens. The otter hunts the Bandon River at dusk.

Yet many of these species are in decline — threatened by habitat loss, pesticide use and a changing climate. We are losing this treasure quietly, season by season.

As people of faith, we are called to act. This June, will you:
• Let a corner of your garden grow wild for pollinators?
• Put up a swift box or bird feeder?
• Choose native plants at your garden centre?
• Leave the mower in the shed for one more week?
• Pick up litter on your next walk?

Small acts, faithfully done, restore the world.
