Easter message from Fr. Joe O’Neill l P.P.

In the spirit of Easter, as reflected in the hopeful words of Bishop Denis Nulty, we are reminded that renewal is always possible, even after the darkest of times. Easter invites us to see light breaking through shadow, to trust that hope is never extinguished and to embrace the quiet but powerful promise of new beginnings. It calls us to be people who notice the small resurrections in everyday life - kindness, forgiveness and compassion - and to let these shape how we live and care for one another.

Pope Leo XIV speaks of Easter as a moment of deep joy rooted in faith and love. It is a celebration not only of Christ’s resurrection, but of the enduring strength of the human spirit when it is grounded in hope. In a world often marked by uncertainty, Easter encourages us to be bearers of peace, to reach out to those who feel forgotten and to believe that love has the final word.

Together, in the Parish of Kill, Ardclough & Johnstown, these inspiring words invite us to move forward with renewed hearts. Easter is not just a single day, but a way of seeing the world - with gratitude, courage and trust in what is yet to come.

May this season inspire us as a Christian people to live more gently, to act more generously and to carry the message of hope into every corner of our lives, becoming signs of light for others.

A message for the Season of Advent
On November 29th and 30th we mark the beginning of another Season of Advent. In the closing weeks of this Jubilee Year of Hope, the Church invites us into a sacred pause - four weeks where the lights dim, the prayers deepen, and we begin to listen again for the quiet footsteps of God drawing near.

Advent represents many things: a season of preparation, of waiting, of longing. But at its heart – and most fitting in the Jubilee Year - Advent is a season of hope. This hope is not wishful thinking but is built on the firm foundations of faith. God keeps His promises … His promise to be with us not just on Christmas day but to the end of time.

You are invited to journey with us as we make the journey from a solitary candle lit on the newly blessed Advent Wreath on November 29th to celebrating a new light coming into the world - Emmanuel, Jesus Christ – on Christmas day. Come Lord Jesus. May this Advent season and the approaching Christmas be a time of great blessings and graces in your life.

Keep in touch with this website and the Parish Newsletter for upcoming events.

October: The Month of Our Lady

Devotion to Our Lady in October dates back to Pope Pius V who established the ‘Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.’ The Feast was originally celebrated on the first Sunday of October each year to mark the Anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto (this battle in 1571 resulted in Christians having greater protection when travelling on the Mediterranean Sea). Pope Pius V gave the feast day a fixed date of October 7th each year.

As we have just begun the month of October, we turn to Our Lady asking her protection and guidance over the coming weeks. During this month, Catholics around the world are encouraged to pray the Rosary daily, reflect on the mysteries of Christ’s life, and seek the intercession of Our Lady. Mary, as our spiritual Mother, who promises to guide us with love and draw us more deeply into the heart of her Son.

As we honour our mother Mary under the title of ‘Our Lady of the Rosary’ we ask her special blessings for those who experience ill health of mind, body or spirit. With this in mind, on Tuesday October 7th in St. Brigid’s Church in Kill, we will have the Sacrament of Anointing the Sick immediately after the 10am morning Mass. All are welcome, you might like to come along or to bring a friend or neighbour in need of a little blessing.

In this month of October let us take this time to renew our devotion to Mary, entrust her with our intentions, and allow her to lead us in faith, hope, and love.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
On August 15, we celebrate one of the greatest Marian feasts of the Church — the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On this day, we proclaim the truth that Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. In 1950 Pope Pius XII solemnly declared this truth. In doing so he enriched our lives of faith because today’s feast doesn’t just speak of our Mother Mary, it speaks about God’s promise to all of us.

Mary’s Assumption is not only a unique privilege for her; it is a sign of hope for the entire church. In the second reading today, St. Paul reminds us that “Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep” Where Christ has gone, we are called to follow. Mary is the first disciple , the first to say “yes” completely, the one who bore the Son of God and remained faithful to Him from Bethlehem to Calvary.

Because of her perfect union with her Son she also shares in his Resurrection in a unique way – not only in Spirit but in body. In a world that prizes success, status and self-promotion, Mary shows us another way, the way of humble trust in God’s Plan. We live in a world where death, suffering and injustice often seem to have the final word. Today we celebrate that death is not the end, evil doesn’t win. So today as we honour the Virgin Mary in her Assumption let us not only admire her, let us imitate her. Let her faith become our faith, her ‘yes’ be our ‘yes.’ Holy Mary assumed into heaven, pray for us.
