Today (20 August) we celebrate the Feast of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Doctor of the Church. On 28 August, we celebrate the Feast of St. Augustine of Hippo, Doctor of the Church. So what exactly is a Doctor of the Church?

Doctor of the Church (in Latin, doctor means teacher) is a title given to certain saints in recognition of their significant contribution to theology or doctrine through their study and writing.

There are currently 38 Doctors of the Church - the first four (Ambrose, Augustine, Jerome, and Gregory) were declared by Pope Boniface VIII in 1298. The most recently declared Doctor is St. John Henry Newman who was declared a Doctor by Pope Leo XVI in 2025. The first woman to be declared a Doctor of the Church was St. Theresa of Avila when Pope Paul VI elevated her to the position in 1970. Since then, three other woman have been given the title: Catherine of Sienna, Therese of Lisieux, and Hildegard of Bingen.

The shortest period of time between death and nomination was Alphonsus Liguori who died in 1787 and was declared a Doctor in 1871, a period of 84 years. The longest longest period between death and nomination was St. Irenaeus, which took 1,800 years!

We have books by, and about, the various Doctors of the Church in our Parish Library which will be open tomorrow (Friday) from 10:30am until 4pm. Why not call in to discover more.
