Galway Cathedral

Galway Cathedral Situated on the banks of the River Corrib in Galway city, Galway Cathedral is the most recently built of Europe's great stone cathedrals.

Galway Cathedral is an oasis of prayer and serenity in the heart of Galway City. It is the seat of the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Galway, Kilmacduagh & Kilfenora. The Cathedral of Galway was dedicated on 15 August 1965, and as such is the youngest of Europe's great stone cathedrals. It is dedicated to Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and Saint Nicholas.

With great joy and deep gratitude, we celebrated the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, beginning with the Holy Mass and then walking in procession from the Abbey to the Poor Clare Monastery. Though the wind and rain accompanied us along the way, our hearts were lifted in faith as the Lord Jesus, truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament, passed through our streets, renewing among us the hope and communion that flow from the Eucharist.

“In the Eucharist Jesus does not give us a ‘thing,’ but himself.” — Pope Benedict XVI

Mass at the Grotto in Greenfields

Throughout the month of May, the Rosary has been prayed each evening at the grotto in Greenfields. It has been a lovely way for people to gather in prayer and to honour Our Lady during this special month.

As May draws to a close, we will come together for Mass at the grotto on Sunday, 31 May, at 7:30pm. The Mass will be celebrated by Fr John Gerard Acton.

Everyone is warmly invited to join us for this special evening. Whether you have attended the Rosary during the month or would simply like to come along for the Mass, you will be very welcome.

This Sunday, Br Ian will be ordained to the priesthood in Ennis.

Having spent his diaconate year serving among us at Galway Cathedral, Br Ian has been a great blessing to our community through his generous ministry. From all of us at Galway Cathedral, we give thanks for his time here and assure him of our prayers as he begins this new chapter of priestly ministry.

May the Lord bless him abundantly, and may St Francis guide him always to live close to Christ, close to the poor, and filled with peace and joy. Amen.

In Celtic Christianity, the Holy Spirit is often symbolised by the wild goose, a creature that embodies the Spirit’s unpredictable and untamed nature. As we reflect this Pentecost night, let’s embrace the wild goose’s call to adventure.

Holy Spirit, breath of life and light,
Present in each moment, near and far,
Fill our hearts with your gentle grace,
Guide us with your wisdom and truth,
Inspire us to walk the path of love.

In moments of doubt, be our comfort,
In times of joy, our song of praise,
Grant us strength in our weakness,
And peace amidst life’s storms.

Bless our world with your healing presence,
Mend what is broken, restore what is lost,
Unite us in your boundless love,
And lead us towards your eternal light.

Amen.

Our newest neighbours at Galway Cathedral.

The eggs of our resident swan have hatched, and the little cygnets are already reminding us of the wonders of God’s creation.

In a world where there is so much to trouble the heart, it is good to pause before these small signs of new life and give thanks.

On this anniversary of Pope Leo XIV’s election, we remember with gratitude the young people from Galway, including some from the Cathedral parish, who travelled to Rome for the Jubilee of Youth, joining over one million young Catholics in faith and hope.
