We were very proud to host the Communities in Action event for the International Day of Charity. It was great to have such a good turnout of people looking to sign up, help out, and volunteer their time and talents for such worthy causes.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for the first Galway event on Saturday, marking the International Day of Charity. 💚

It was great to see so many people come through the doors of St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church to meet the organisations involved, have a chat and learn more about the work happening every day across Galway’s communities.

We were also delighted to welcome the Mayor of Galway, Cllr Helen Ogbu, along with Deputy Noel Grealish, Deputy Sean Kyne and Deputy Pete Roche. Thank you for taking the time to join us and support Galway’s community and voluntary sector.

For Galway Hospice, the day was also a valuable opportunity to listen, learn and connect, with members of the public and with colleagues from organisations across the city and county. There was a real sense of community in the room, and we were delighted to be part of it.

A huge thank you to all the organisations who came together to make the first Galway Communities in Action possible:

COPE Galway. Croí Heart & Stroke Charity. Family Resource Centre. Galway Hospice. Galway Simon Community. Galway City Community Network. Galway City Partnership. The Galway Centre for Independent Living. Volunteer Galway. Hand in Hand Children's Cancer Charity. Link Galway CLG. SCCUL Enterprises. Youth Work Ireland Galway.

And thank you to The Wheel for supporting and promoting the initiative.

We hope this is just the beginning, with an opportunity to build on the event and bring even more of Galway’s community and voluntary organisations together in the future. 💚

Chamber Choir Ireland presents: Forgotten Peoples
Friday 25 September 2026, 7:30PM, St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, Galway
with Conductor Gabriel Crouch

Join Ireland's National Chamber Choir for an evening of music that is both joyful and poignant, quirky and heartfelt.

Veljo Tormis' 'Forgotten Peoples' is a collection of songs preserving the rich folklore of several vanishing cultures along the Gulf of Finland.

These delightful and varied folk songs include creation myths, wedding songs, and lullabies, as well as songs about the natural world around us: birds, animals, changing seasons, life and death in the country.

Woven among these folk tunes, selections from Michael Gordon's 'Anonymous Man' follow the composer's changing New York neighbourhood, from industrial warehouse district to residential area.

Emma O'Halloran's 'gone' draws on the words of people who have experienced homelessness in Ireland over the past decade, offering us fragments of real lived experiences through a collage of direct quotes.

Franciso del Pino's 'Index' honours the story of the Irish diaspora in Argentina, and the thousands of Irish emigrants who arrived in the port of Buenos Aires in the 19th century.
