VOCATIONS SUNDAY

Good Shepherd Sunday – Vocations Sunday, April 26

“Every vocation is an immeasurable gift for the Church and for those who receive it with joy.” – Pope Leo XIV, Message for the 63rd World Day of Prayer for Vocations 2026

In his message for this year’s World Day of Prayer for Vocations, Pope Leo XIV reminds us that vocation is an “interior discovery” of God’s gift, planted deep within our hearts and nurtured through prayer, listening, and trust. He encourages all of us to create a spirit of faith, prayer, and support, so that God’s call may be heard and generously embraced.

We give thanks that, in the Archdiocese of Dublin, there are currently three seminarians, along with others discerning a call to the priesthood this year. Their generous “yes” is a powerful sign of hope for our Church and our communities. Let us keep them in our prayers, and also remember all those considering a vocation to the priesthood, religious life, lay ministry, or family life. May they find the courage to pause, listen, and follow the voice of the Good Shepherd.

May this Good Shepherd Sunday be a moment of encouragement and support, where vocations are welcomed, nurtured, and allowed to flourish among us.

SIR HENRY ROBINSON 1st BARONET OF LIS-NA-CARRIG - By Myles Reid
In 1899 Sir Henry Robinson was head of the Local Government Board. This Board funded the running of local county and urban councils. For twenty-four years he was influential in showing newly elected nationalists how to run and fund their local councils. In 1922 his role ended when the Free State started. Sir Henry lived in Lis na Carrig on Brighton Road in Foxrock. His house was attacked during the Civil War and he left the country. He died in 1927 having never returned back to Lis na Carrig. Lis na Carrig now plays a prominent role in the community for health and wellbeing.

FOXROCK LOCAL HISTORY FEBRUARY 17TH - PARISH PASTORAL CENTRE

Lifeboats in Dublin Bay date back over 200 years, starting with the Dublin Ballast Board placing boats at Clontarf, Sandycove, Sutton, Pigeon House, and Howth in the early 1800s, run by local volunteers; the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) took over in 1861, establishing a major station at Dún Laoghaire, which saw significant bravery, but also tragedy, most notably the 1895 Palme disaster where fifteen lifeboat crew members were lost, becoming the most traumatic event in the station's history. Cormac will be showing many rare and interesting photographic images and charts.

What a fantastic night we had in our Parish Centre last night reliving the highs and lows of the life of Percy French! A huge thank you to everyone who came and to and F.A.C.E for the organisation. Just a wonderful celebration of music, stories and poetry. Great to have everyone singing and clapping along!

Well done to Lily and her Dad who made three beautiful crosses at our session yesterday; one for their home, one for our catechesis classes in the Parish and one to bring into school tomorrow where her class in St Brigid’s school will be making their own crosses to bring home.

So, if you have a St Brigid’s cross in your home, here’s a beautiful prayer for February…

St Brigid, you were a woman of peace.
You brought harmony where there was conflict.
You brought light to the darkness.
You brought hope to the downcast.
May the mantle of your peace cover those who are troubled and anxious, and may peace be firmly rooted in our hearts and in our world.
Inspire us to act justly and to reverence all God has made.
Brigid, you were a voice for the wounded and the weary.
Strengthen what is weak within us.
Calm us into a quietness that heals and listens.
May we grow each day into greater wholeness in mind, body and spirit.

Amen

A huge thank you to everyone for coming to make St Brigid’s crosses with us yesterday. Over 60 people came together to learn the ancient art of weaving their own cross to bring home. We had ages from 6 to 93! Thank you very specially to Grainne and Paul Markey who organised for our reeds to be brought from Donegal for us!

As night falls on January 31st, the eve of St Brigid’s day, a quiet tradition is still carried out in many Irish homes. A pause between winter and spring.

A quiet welcome to light, renewal, and hope.

A cloth, scarf, or ribbon is placed on a windowsill, doorstep, or outside in the garden.

This is the Brat Bríde, left out overnight so St Brigid may pass by and bless it.

By morning, the cloth is believed to hold protection, healing, and good fortune for the year ahead. Some keep it tucked away safely in the home. Others use it during illness, times of worry, or simply as a comfort. It is a simple ritual, but a powerful one.

Gentle, meaningful, and deeply rooted in Irish life.
