People from all over Dublin and Glendalough converged on Christ Church Cathedral Dublin on Saturday June 6 to witness the commissioning of seven new Diocesan Lay Readers and one new Parish Reader.

Becky Heaslip of CORE Saint Catherine's Church, Andrea Black of Holy Trinity Church Rathmines; Beatrice Somers of the Christ Church Cathedral Group of Parishes, Joanne Kenny of St. John the Evangelist, Coolock, Nyaradzo Mutangirwa of Athy Church of Ireland, Kris McCaffrey of Clontarf Parish, Church of Saint John the Baptist and Paddy Halligan of Timolin, Castledermot and Killeagh (Narraghmore, Timolin, Castledermot & Kinneagh CofI Parish) were commissioned as Diocesan Lay Readers by Archbishop Michael Jackson.

The Archbishop also commissioned John Alexander of Zion Parish Church as a Parish Reader.

Family and friends of the lay readers were joined by their Rectors and many members of their parish families to fill Christ Church Cathedral for a joyful and uplifting service.

The sermon was preached by Canon Prof Anne Lodge, one of the joint Wardens of Readers for Dublin and Glendalough. She noted that after the service each of the candidates would leave the cathedral “commissioned and licensed to serve – like a sort of religious 007”.

Eighteen of Christ Church Cathedral Dublin’s historic clerestory windows have been restored to their former glory and were rededicated by the Archbishop of Dublin on Sunday afternoon (June 14).

Members of the cathedral chapter and board, community and friends were joined by Cllr David Coffey, representing the Lord Mayor of Dublin, and Evensong, sung by the Cathedral Choir, was followed by a celebratory reception.

The clerestory windows on the cathedral’s south side were in a perilous condition. As with almost all the stained glass windows in Christ Church, they date from the 1871–78 restoration by George Edmond Street. Their refurbishment is the beginning of an ambitious restoration programme leading up to Christ Church’s millennium in 2028.

The Rathdrum & Derralossary with Glenealy Group of Parishes embarked on a new chapter on Friday June 5 as parishioners and the wider community gathered to rejoice at the arrival of their new Rector. The Revd Billy Burke was instituted in St Saviour’s Church in Rathdrum by Archbishop Michael Jackson, fittingly within two days of the Feast of St Kevin whose ancient monastic settlement lies within the parish.

Billy was joined by his wife Mara and their two daughters as well as family and friends and well wishers from Kilkenny where he served as Bishop’s Vicar and Curate Assistant in St Canice’s Cathedral and Kilkenny Union of Parishes. The wider parish community was represented by members of the local Catholic parish and local public representatives.

The preacher was the Dean of Ossory, the Very Revd Stephen Farrell.

With many thanks to Tony Monaghan for the fantastic photographs.

Archbishop Michael Jackson has expressed solidarity with members of the Ukrainian community in Ireland following attacks in Kharkiv and Kyiv overnight (June 14/15). He has extended sympathy to the relatives of those who have been killed and injured and to members of the Ukrainian Orthodox community on substantial damage to the Unesco–listed Kyiv–Pechersk Lavra, which comprises a complex of monasteries and churches and has been a place of pilgrimage for Christians for centuries.

This morning the Archbishop stated:

“We are honoured to have members of the Ukrainian Orthodox Community in Ireland worship in our churches. We are also pleased that in many instances they feel at ease in participating in the life of our parishes. Our own understanding of global Christianity has been enriched by such friendships and encounters.

“It is therefore a great sadness to learn of damage and devastation to buildings and sites which are holy by heritage and holy by use over centuries. Public worship and personal pilgrimage are the lifeblood of religious expression of faith. We extend our sympathy to all who have been injured and killed together with their distressed relatives. We pray for peace and for an end to the war. We stand in prayerful support of the many Ukrainian families and individuals in Ireland who are our neighbours and our friends.”
