Year of the Lord's Voice: Day 3 - Divine Direction
Welcome to Day 3 of our prayer and fasting period, focusing on seeking God's divine direction for success in 2025. Today, we'll explore three key Bible stories that offer guidance on seeking God's will and navigating life's challenges.
1. Jonah's Disobedience and Its Consequences (Jonah 1-4)
- Jonah's Flight and the Storm: "Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah, son of Amittai: 'Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because their wickedness has come up before me.'" (Jonah 1:1-2) However, Jonah disobeyed God and fled to Tarshish. "But the Lord sent out a great wind over the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up." (Jonah 1:4)
- Jonah's Confession and the Whale: "The sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they said to one another, 'Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.'" (Jonah 1:7) The lot fell on Jonah, and he confessed his disobedience. "So they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the sea ceased from its raging." (Jonah 1:15) Jonah was swallowed by a large fish.
- Jonah's Repentance and God's Mercy: "Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish." (Jonah 2:1) God heard his prayer and commanded the fish to vomit Jonah onto dry land. "And the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, 'Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.'" (Jonah 3:1)
2. Joseph's Search for His Brothers (Genesis 37:12-36)
- Joseph's Search for His Brothers: "Then his father Israel said to him, 'Go now, see how your brothers and the flock are, and bring me word back.'" (Genesis 37:13) Joseph went searching for his brothers, but they had moved on. "He met a man in the field and asked him, 'Where are your brothers?'" (Genesis 37:16)
- God's Intervention and Reconciliation: Joseph's brothers, filled with jealousy, sold him into slavery. Years later, during a famine, they traveled to Egypt to buy food. Joseph, now a powerful official in Egypt, recognized his brothers, but initially tested them before revealing his identity. "Then Joseph said to his brothers, 'I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?'" (Genesis 45:3) God ultimately brought about reconciliation between Joseph and his brothers, saving his family and the people of Egypt from famine.
3. The Young Prophet and the Old Prophet (1 Kings 13)
- The Young Prophet's Obedience and God's Power: "The word of the Lord came to a man of God from Judah, who said to Jeroboam, 'This is what the Lord says: 'I am going to tear down the altar, and the ashes that are on it will be scattered. The high places will be destroyed.'" (1 Kings 13:2) God demonstrated His power through the young prophet, causing the altar to split and Jeroboam's hand to wither.
- The Old Prophet's Deception and Its Consequences: "Now there was a certain old prophet living in Bethel, whose sons came and told him all that the man of God had done there that day." (1 Kings 13:11) The old prophet, seeking to discredit the young prophet, lied to him, claiming an angel instructed him to bring the young prophet back to his house for a meal. "The old prophet said to him, 'I too am a prophet, as you are. And an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, 'Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread and drink water.'" (1 Kings 13:18) The young prophet, believing the old prophet's lie, disobeyed God's command to not eat or drink in Bethel and was killed by a lion on his way home.
