Friends of Bully's Acre Drogheda The poor law union act was introduced to Ireland in 1838 and each union had its own workhouse. The Drogheda Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839.

The Workhouse was opened in 1841 at a cost of £8,550. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 800 inmates. The Drogheda Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Clogher, Dysart, Monasterboice, Mullary, and Termonfechin in Co. Louth, and Ardcath, Duleck, Julianstown, Melifont, St Mary's, and Stamullen in Co. Meath. The main building complex was demolished to create space for

the building of a residential home, but the original hospital building still stands as St Mary's Hospital.
