Gurranabraher, Cork, 1950

A view of a street (and a horse and cart) in Gurranabraher, a residential suburb on the north-western side of Cork, in about 1950. The name Gurranabraher is derived from the Irish ‘Garrán na mBráthar’, meaning ‘Grove of the Brothers’. Development of this suburb commenced in the 1930s as a response to the urgent need to relocate thousands of people from overcrowded tenements in Cork to more appropriate and healthier social housing. Nearly two thousand homes were built in Gurranabraher by Cork Corporation between 1934 and 1944. The local parish church, the Church of the Ascension, was designed by James Rupert Boyd Barrett (c.1904-1976) and was constructed between 1953 and 1955. Capuchin friars ministered from this church in Gurranabraher from 1981 until 2008 when falling vocations to religious life forced the Order to hand back responsibility for the parish to the local diocese. The image forms part of ‘The Capuchin Annual’ photographic collection. (Image Identifier: https://catholicarchives.ie/index.php/gurranabraher-cork)
