Scala Youth Ministry

Scala Youth Ministry Scala means ‘steps’. It is the name of a little village in Italy where the Redemptorists first began their work with the poor.

Scala Youth Ministry supports schools & communities through retreats, wellbeing days, leadership training (Meitheal), children’s camps, after-school activities, and family/school support programmes. Its name symbolises new beginnings - first steps on a journey that calls us to friendship, fairness and service. In 1988, Scala opened in Cork, and today is located near Blackrock Castle on the banks o

f the River Lee. It is home to Redemptorist Youth Ministry, one of the most significant providers of ministry to young people in Ireland. Each year, over 3000 students from Cork and all over Munster participate in Scala’s retreat, leadership and volunteering programmes. These are facilitated by a vibrant and committed international team, who following the same inspiration, create a space for young people to experience friendship, fairness and service.

🌿What exactly is a Sensory Garden? 🌸

In this reel, our volunteer Laura explains the idea behind a sensory garden and why spaces like this can make such a positive difference within communities. 💚

A sensory garden is designed to engage the senses - sight, sound, smell, touch, and even taste - creating a calming, welcoming, and interactive environment for people of all ages and abilities. 🌼✨

From colourful flowers and calming scents to natural textures and peaceful spaces, sensory gardens can support wellbeing, inclusion, learning, mindfulness, and connection with nature. 🌱

Here at Scala, we hope this project becomes a place where local young people, families, and the wider community can gather, reflect, connect, and feel at home.

A big thank you to Megan as we say goodbye after a remarkable 14 year legacy at Scala. We wish Megan all the best in her next chapter of life. Over the years, Megan has been far more than a work colleague, she has been a mentor, advocate and a steady guiding force for countless young people who have come through Scala whether it was the Retreats, Outreach or Meitheal. Megan’s patience, warmth and genuine belief in the potential of every person she’s worked with has left a lasting mark on Scala and on all the young people that she has worked with. Megan, Thank you for everything you’ve given to Scala team and especially to the young people whose futures are brighter because of you. You will be deeply missed. We wish you all the best in whatever comes next.

🌸 Why are we building a Sensory Garden at Scala?

In this reel, Megan shares the heart behind the project and the vision of creating a welcoming space for the whole community. 💚

For many years, Scala has been a place of connection, support, and community for local young people and families. This Sensory Garden is another step in creating spaces where people can gather, reflect, learn, connect with nature, and support wellbeing together. 🌿

We hope this garden will become a place where everyone feels welcome - a peaceful and positive space for the local community to enjoy for years to come.
