Rest in peace to one of St. Mary’s on the Hill’s forever friends Canon Liam O’ Regan, who served as parish priest of our parish from ‘90-‘96. Many great memories.

Canon Liam O’Regan, retired parish priest of Douglas, has died today.
Canon Liam was ordained in 1961 and began his priestly ministry on temporary mission in Motherwell Diocese, Scotland.
On his return in 1962 he served as curate in Uibh Laoire Parish as well as Assistant Diocesan Inspector.
He then served as Chaplain to Sarsfield Court Hospital and as Diocesan Advisor for secondary schools, Dean of Residence in UCC, Curate in the parishes of Enniskeane, Kilmichael, Ballyphehane and The Lough.
He was appointed Administrator of Kilmichael Parish (1988 – 1990) and as Parish Priest in Knocknaheeny and Holyhill (1990 – 1996) and in Douglas (1996 – 2008).
Canon Liam continued to serve in Douglas Parish as Assistant Priest until his retirement in 2015.
May Canon Liam now rest peacefully in the Lord whom he faithfully served.

Today we bid farewell to our friend Fr. Greg Howard as he celebrated his final ceremonies at Knocknaheeny/Hollyhill this weekend. Fr. Greg has done great work in the community over the past 9 years and he will be greatly missed by all. Always one for a story, a joke or a song- so if tomorrow never comes Fr.Greg, we can’t let today go without saying thank you once more and one final song before you go.

Bishop Fintan Gavin's statement following the fatal accident at Monkstown

We have learned with utter shock and sadness of the untimely death of Fr Con Cronin, curate in the Harbour Parishes of Passage West and Monkstown, who died as a result of an accident.

Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go to Fr Con’s family, his wide circle of friends, parishioners and his fellow priests in the St. Patrick’s Missionary Society, Kiltegan, as well as the priests of the Diocese of Cork and Ross.

This tragic accident also leaves another family mourning the loss of a loved one and I extend my prayerful support to his family also.

I pray for healing and peace for all who were injured and those who witnessed the accident. I wish to acknowledge the professionalism and kindness of the emergency services who attended the accident scene.

Fr. Con has served in the Harbour Parishes since 2012 establishing a warm rapport both pastorally and personally with all to whom he ministered and all who had contact with him.

He will be remembered fondly for his unique sense of humour and his openness to all people. He died on the day when the Gospel reminds us what happened the day Jesus asked Peter to step out of the boat and come to him across the water.
Jesus called out to him, saying, ‘Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid.’

Fr. Con who was ordained in 1979 courageously ministered in Africa with the Kiltegan Fathers for 25 years before returning to Ireland in 2004 where after promoting the missionary work of the church he settled into parish life in his native Co Cork.

His love for his native place and its people — the Borlin Valley in Bantry Parish — has never wavered.

All who know Fr. Con are grateful for having known him and our diocese is blessed that he ministered among us.

We commend both men to the Lord and pray God’s comfort and consolation for all those who are in mourning.

Following the government announcement of new public health measures "The Path Ahead", public worship including Mass with a congregation will resume from Monday 10th May.
Bishop Fintan Gavin has issued detailed guidance to parishes and churches in the diocese.
"This is a very welcome announcement as we have found the last four months of not being able to gather with people for Eucharist in our parishes since St. Stephen’s Day very difficult," Bishop Fintan says.
