What a beautiful story — and one with a very special connection to St Anne's Shandon. 🔔
⠀
To mark Bishop Paul Colton's retirement after 27 years as President and Chair of Saint Luke's Home, Cork, the Board commissioned a truly unique gift: a hand-crafted replica of one of the Shandon bells, mounted on a plinth — both made from a wooden beam that had supported our tenor bell since the bells were installed here in 1752.
⠀
The beam was salvaged during the recent restoration of our bellframe by Keith Starr of Hearthstone, and transformed into a thing of beauty by craftsman Ray Timmins. The plinth still bears the water damage and nail holes of its centuries of service — a piece of living history from the heart of Cork's northside.
⠀
Our own Rev. Meghan Farr, Chaplain at Saint Luke's Home, was present for the presentation at Fota Island on Thursday evening.
⠀
As Saint Luke's Home has always been part of St Anne's parish, this gift captures something of the deep and enduring bond between our two communities. We congratulate Bishop Colton on his remarkable years of service, and wish him every blessing in his retirement.
