The damp heat of Tampa, Florida, was supposed to bring relief to her failing joints, but for twenty-four-year-old Sister Briege McKenna, it felt like an endurance test. Her young body was trapped in the agonizing grip of severe rheumatoid arthritis, encased in heavy leg casts that had bound her for two painful years.

“I grew up in Northern Ireland, one of five children,” she recalled during an interview with Father Mark Mary, MFVA, on EWTN, reflecting on the humble origins of her faith. “My mother died suddenly on Christmas Day when I was twelve. That night, as I grieved, I heard an inner voice say, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll take care of you.’ From that moment, I knew I would become a nun.”

O blessed Saint Carlo Acutis, faithful friend of Jesus and devoted servant of the Eucharist, intercede for me before the throne of God and ask Him to grant me the miracle I humbly seek. With confidence in God’s mercy and love, I place before you my special intention: [mention your intention here]. Help me to trust God even when the answer seems impossible, to remain faithful in times of trial, and to accept His holy will with courage and peace. Today we celebrate the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

We celebrate this great day nine months after she was immaculately conceived, on December 8th, in the womb of her mother St. Anne.

In today’s Gospel we are reminded of the great prophecy that Mary will fulfill:

"𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐄𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐥, 𝐚 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬 ‘𝐆𝐨𝐝-𝐢𝐬-𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡-𝐮𝐬."

Perhaps today we can ponder this great mystery.

How a human like Mary was given such an honour to be the God-bearer, and to have Jesus within her for nine months.

She became a tabernacle.

Coming from her Jesus would of course have looked like Mary and derived much from her.

We honour her today for her great faith and fedility to God's will.

Her yes, made redemption possible.

Her birth gave us all hope.

Dominic Auricchio, a 13-year-old from Westfield, New Jersey, has felt called to the priesthood since early childhood. At age four he dreamed that God told him to become a priest—a conviction that has remained steady ever since.

In December 2022, Dominic began suffering severe headaches. An MRI revealed a large brain tumor. Doctors considered surgery, but the location made the procedure risky. While the family weighed options and Dominic continued praying, he experienced what he describes as a visit from the Virgin Mary in May 2023.

“She was dressed just like we imagine her… and she told me that everything would be OK,” he recalled.

The following month a scan showed the tumor had significantly reduced. Surgery was no longer necessary. Today, follow-up MRIs show only a small residual mark.
Despite ongoing challenges, including seizures whose cause remains unclear, Dominic remains deeply committed to his faith. He serves as an altar boy at St. Helen’s Church and helps as a “buddy” for children with disabilities at inclusive Masses. His father is a Marine who served in Iraq, and Dominic has spoken of possibly serving as a Marine before entering seminary.

This year he won the Cardinal Joseph Tobin Essay and Video Contest sponsored by the Archdiocese of Newark. In his entry he shared both his ordinary teenage interests—family, hockey—and his spiritual experiences, including the vision of Mary and his lasting desire for the priesthood.

“Priesthood is a life of service, sacrifice and joy, centered on Jesus,” he said. “I trust that God is guiding me step by step.”

For Dominic, the difficulties have deepened his empathy and trust. “Even if something bad happens,” he said, “it’s part of his plan, so you just have to go with it.”
