An Gairdín Beo

An Gairdín Beo A two acre community garden in the heart of Carlow town that's being created by the people, for the people.

In September 2014 a group of people were bought together to discuss the idea of creating a community garden in the centre of Carlow town on land that would be leased by the Sisters of Mercy next to St Leo's Convent. Following many meetings the following vision was agreed upon:

The overall vision of the project is of a space in which diverse people can connect more to nature, to the growing and ma

king of food and to each other. The ethos is based on an ecological orientation, on valuing diversity, sustainability and indigenous species. It recognises that we, as humans, are part of nature too. It is committed to the preservation and protection of the site as a green area for the greatest diversity of life possible.

Carlow County Council formally launched its Community-Based Circular Economy Report at the Tinryland Community Hub on Tuesday 1st April. A great piece of research conducted on how we can establish the Circular Economy in our local community here in Carlow. And An Gairdin Beo gets a nice mention on page 45. Lots of great work happening around the county and Breandán Ó Caoimh, Director of O’Keeffe Social Research, authors of the report, reflected on the findings: “What we see in Carlow is a thriving ecosystem of community action—evidence that circularity emerges most powerfully when it is rooted in local identity, social connection and shared purpose. Carlow’s communities are not just participating in the circular economy; they are shaping it.”

Our summer café is now closed for another year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every visitor that made An Gairdín Beo part of their weekly routine..... It has been great to see so many old friends return, and welcome lots of new patrons. We would also like to thank everyone that puts the café together, the producers and our very own Café Ladies, without whom we simply could not open the doors. The gardens remain open Monday to Friday, with some events scheduled for our autumn season.
