The regular Solemn Eucharist Service on Sundays at 11am continues as usual during the process to find a new chaplain.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make Heritage Week at St John's a great success: we welcomed a steady stream of visitors from the locality and from further afield.

We are very grateful to those organisations and individuals who shared the notice for the event or who publicised it, and to Dublin City Council for providing posters.

Heritage Week at St John's

An exhibition will be on view at St John's during Heritage Week, reflecting the Week’s theme that invites us to consider the risks, past and present, of St John’s in relation to its built, cultural and natural heritage and how its community has responded for over 175 years.

The exhibition accompanies the recently published book 'No Church is an Island: 175 years of St John the Evangelist, Sandymount, Dublin', written by Alyson Gavin Lysaght and Shabnam Vasisht.

St John's will be open from 10am to 4pm on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd August, and from 12 noon to 4pm on Sunday 23rd August. Entry is free and all are welcome.

Services for July and August

Book on the History of St John’s
The order for a further print run of ‘No Church is an Island’ has gone to the printer and we await notification of delivery. As soon as the copies arrive, we will post an update here with guidance on how to get your copy.

Dates for your Diary
St John’s will participate in this year’s Heritage Week, the theme of which is Heritage at Risk. There will be a display in the church featuring the valiant efforts over the years by trustees, clergy and congregation, to keep St John’s, a protected structure, in good repair despite financial difficulties and the ravages of the salty, coastal climate. The church will be open between 10am and 4pm on Friday 21st August and Saturday 22nd August, and from 12 noon to 4pm on Sunday 23rd August. All welcome, entry is free of charge.

Update on booksales
The book 'No Church is an Island: 175 years of St John the Evangelist, Sandymount', has had great success and has sold out. The trustees have agreed to a further print run which will be commissioned shortly.If you did not manage to get a copy yet, we will post details here when further copies become available.

NoMowMay at St John’s
St John’s participates every year in NoMowMay, and allows the native plants to thrive for further weeks. The grounds around the church have a very interesting ecology, with numerous species of grasses and wild flowers, including four varieties of orchid. The range of species is reminiscent of those which would have grown in the area two centuries ago when it was meadows and marsh land. Areas are being left unmown or partially mown while keeping enough channels cut short to make sure the grounds do not look neglected.

Launch of book on the history of St John's

The book detailing the history of St John's will be launched by the Rev Robert Marshall on Palm Sunday at 4pm in the church.

Copies of the book will be on sale at the launch priced at €20.

Arrangements are being made to enable the book to be purchased online. Details will be posted here in the coming days.
