We are told that "South of and not far from the boundary of Kilclooney parish is the ruin of a monastery, the Augustinian Priory of Clontuskert. It was reputedly founded in the eighth century by Betan of Clontuskert, whose death is recorded in the Annals at AD 805AD." Augustine’s parish church, Clontuskert, was built in the year 1820. The stone plaque in the side chapel reads, “O Lord have mercy on those who contributed to erect this Chapel under the inspection of the Revd.

Annual Day of Devotion to our Lady of Clonfert – Sunday May 31st 2026

In 2022, when the Shrine of Our Lady of Clonfert was erected as a Diocesan Shrine – the last day of the Month of May was declared a special day of devotion to Our Lady of Clonfert.

This Sunday, a special Camino Pilgrimage will depart from Meelick Church to arrive at the Shrine of Our Lady of Clonfert for the Final Mass of Thanksgiving for the May Devotions at 6.30pm.

Parishes are encouraged to mark this day with special devotions. Individuals, families, groups are encouraged to visit the Shrine in these days and pray the prayer to Our Lady of Clonfert.

Prayer to Our Lady of Clonfert
I come to you, as one of your children, who will never forget the importance of a woman like you. I come to say thanks for the past and the present and ask you to bless me in the future. You know me, you know how I live and you know my needs. Please help me especially when I need you most. I have problems, worries and anxieties the same as everyone else – help me to cope. So often I would just love to give up when life hurts me and people betray me, but give me the courage never to lose heart. Bless my family, my life and my friends. Help me, no matter what happens to me in life, to believe, to trust and to hope.

The Clonfert Diocesan Office has announced the following recent appointments by Bishop Michael.

Father Pat Kenny PP to retire as Parish Priest of New Inn and Bullaun. Effective from 30th June 2026. We thank Father Pat for a lifetime of priestly service and wish him health and happiness in his retirement.

Father Declan McInerney PP Eyrecourt, Clonfert, Meelick and Rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of Clonfert to be Parish Priest of the Parish of New Inn and Bullaun and to provide Sacramental Ministry at Bon Secours Hospital, Galway. Effective from 31st August 2026.

Father Kieran O Rourke PP Woodford and Looscaun to be Parish Priest of Eyrecourt, Clonfert, Meelick, Parish Priest of Lusmagh, Episcopal Chaplain at Emmanuel House of Providence and Rector of the Diocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Clonfert. Effective 31 August 2026.

Over the next months, Bishop Michael will be engaging with the Parish Pastoral Councils and Parish Finance Committees of the various parish communities involved to plan for the future. We owe a debt of gratitude to the priests involved for their generous willingness to serve the people of God and pray God's blessings upon them in their new appointments.
