Pointing to what is good - a positive vision = The crucifix!
How so?
Love in the soul has various developmental stages , a lovely little book written by the psychologist Anna Bissi "The Colour of Wheat", charts these stages and contextualises them within the culture. The highest stage which we should all be aiming for, is self-sacrifice, of which the crucifix is a symbol.
'Oh', I hear you protest, 'But God doesn't want our self-sacrifice, He has already paid the price for us to live in utopia so that we don't have to be self-sacrificing!'
My response is, 'How do you think all that is good and beautiful and lovely is achieved without self-sacrifice?'
God's love is actually a tough love. He loves us enough to discipline us, to test us and to correct us with the rod of negative consequences, so that we learn the excellent lesson of self-sacrifice.
The discovery of this treasure, this pearl of great price, leads the soul to sacrifice everything that the world and flesh has to offer for a relationship with One who alone can make such a life of self-sacrifice heaven on earth.
There's just 11 years left before the anniversary of the bimillennial year of redemption when Christ demonstrated the power of self-sacrifice, and pointed to it as a way to follow Him and become as He is.
To remind us of this a special Crucifix has been designed and commissioned and is available from the Carthusian Order.
