A Prague scholar died over Budapest under a British alias

On 5 May 1944, a British Vickers Wellington Mk.X bomber (JA512 / EP-E), flying with No. 104 Squadron of the RAF, carried out a night mission over the Hungarian capital.

One of the crew members was Flying Officer HENRY OSBERT ZETLAND (Service Number: 87294). He was born in Prague on 11 March 1903 as Jindřich (Hainz) Otto Ziegler.

He was not a professional soldier. He was a sociologist and political scientist, a university lecturer who studied the political and social processes of interwar Europe. He earned his doctorate at the University of Heidelberg, then moved to Frankfurt.
In 1938, he fled to Great Britain from the N**i occupation of Czechoslovakia.

His parents were deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp because of their Jewish origin and did not survive the Holocaust.

He joined the Royal Air Force, where he was trained as an air gunner. He first served in North Africa, then operated from bases in Italy, attacking Axis targets.

On the night of 5 May 1944, JA512/EP-E engaged in combat over Budapest with a German night fighter and crashed.

All members of the crew were killed in action.

Their graves are located today in the British military cemetery at Solymár, near Budapest.

The works of Jindřich (Hainz) Otto Ziegler were forgotten during the years of socialism, as they did not align with communist ideology. After the political changes, however, the works of the Prague scholar were rediscovered — a man who now rests far from his homeland.

1944. május 5-én egy brit Vickers Wellington Mk.X bombázó (JA512 / EP-E) a RAF 104. századának kötelékében hajtott végre éjszakai bevetést a magyar főváros felett.

A személyzet egyik tagja Flying Officer HENRY OSBERT ZETLAND (Service Number: 87294) volt. 1903. március 11-én Prágában született Jindřich (Hainz) Otto Ziegler néven.

Nem hivatásos katona volt. Szociológus és politológus, egyetemi docens, aki a két világháború közötti Európa politikai és társadalmi folyamatait kutatta. A heidelbergi egyetemen doktorált, majd Frankfurtba költözött.
1938-ban Csehszlovákia náci megszállása elől Nagy-Britanniába menekült.

Szüleit zsidó származásuk miatt a Theresienstadti koncentrációs táborba deportálták és nem élték túl a holokausztot.

Csatlakozott a Brit királyi légierőhöz, ahol lövész kiképzést kapott. Először Észak-Afrikában szolgált, majd Olaszországi bázisról támadták a tengelyhatalmak célpontjait.

1944. május 5-én éjjel a JA512/EP-E légiharcba keveredett Budapest felett egy német éjszakai vadásszal, és lezuhant.

A személyzet összes tagja hősi halált halt.

Jindřich (Hainz) Otto Ziegler művei a szocializmus évei alatt feledésbe merültek, hiszen azok nem szolgálták a kommunista ideológiát.
A rendszerváltás után azonban újra felfedezték a Prágai tudós munkáit, aki távol otthonától alussza örök álmát.

Every year on April 25, ANZAC Day is commemorated.
It is one of the most important national days of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand.

It was established in memory of those who fell during the Gallipoli landings in 1915, and today it honours all Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women who have served and died in wars.

In 1944, during the air battles over Hungary, Australian and New Zealand airmen also took part in combat.
Many of them lost their lives here.

Today, at the military cemetery in Solymár/Budapest, 13 Australian and 6 New Zealand servicemen rest.

On this day, we remember them – those who rest far from home, far from their families, for 82 years now.

ANZAC Day Magyarországon 🇭🇺🇦🇺🇳🇿

Minden év április 25-én tartják az ANZAC Day-t.
Ez Ausztrália és Új-Zéland egyik legfontosabb nemzeti emléknapja.

1915-ben, a gallipoli partraszálláskor elesett katonák emlékére jött létre,
ma pedig minden háborúban szolgált és elesett ausztrál és új-zélandi katonára emlékeznek ezen a napon.

1944-ben, a Magyarország felett zajló légi harcokban ausztrál és új-zélandi repülők is részt vettek.
Többen közülük itt vesztették életüket.

A solymári katonai temetőben ma 13 ausztrál és 6 új-zélandi katona nyugszik.

A mai napon rájuk emlékezünk – azokra, akik távol az otthonuktól, távol a családjuktól pihennek immár 82 éve.

🌺Sírjaik ma is a béke csendes követei, távol a hazájuktól.

Six men, six homes – and one cemetery on foreign soil.

On 16 April 1944 at 20:17, a Vickers Wellington Mk X bomber (JA127, QT-H) of No. 142 Squadron RAF took off from Foggia airfield in Italy.
Its mission, like that of many other aircraft that night, was to bomb the railway marshalling yards in Budapest.

JA127, like 13 other aircraft on the same operation, did not return to base. The crew was initially listed as missing.

According to available records, the aircraft was shot down by a German night fighter near Budapest (it crashed between Gyál and Alsónémedi). All six crew members were killed.
Local civilians buried the airmen in the nearby cemetery.

After the war, their remains were reinterred at the Budapest War Cemetery in Solymár.

Hat férfi, hat otthon – és egy közös temető, idegen földön.

1944. április 16-án 20:17-kor a RAF 142. századának egyik Vickers Wellington Mk X bombázója (JA127 QT-H) felszállt az olaszországi Foggia repülőteréről.
A feladata a többi repülőhöz hasonlóan a budapesti vasúti rendezőpályaudvarok bombázása volt.

A JA127 ebből a bevetésből 13 másik repülőhöz hasonlóan nem tért vissza a bázisra. Sokáig eltűntként kezelték a személyzetet. A rendelkezésre álló adatok szerint a repülőgépet német éjszakai vadász lőtte le Budapest mellett (Gyál és Alsónémedi között zuhant le). A teljes személyzet életét vesztette.

A helyi lakosság a település temetőjében temette el a katonákat, majd a háború után a solymári Budapest War Cemetery területére szállították át a földi maradványokat.

Why did a British Prime Minister and a royal prince visit the same cemetery in Hungary?

🇭🇺 Miért ment el egy brit miniszterelnök és egy királyi herceg ugyanabba a magyar temetőbe? 👇

Near Budapest, in Solymár, lies the only Commonwealth war cemetery in Hungary.
211 Allied airmen are buried here, most of them killed over Hungary during the Second World War.

After the war, those who had been buried across the country were brought together into a single cemetery. It was established in 1947 and officially inaugurated on 2 May, in a large ceremonial event with full military honours.

The ceremony was attended by key political and military figures of the time: on the Hungarian side, President Zoltán Tildy and Prime Minister Ferenc Nagy, and on the Allied side, American, British and Soviet generals and diplomats.

This cemetery is not only a resting place for the fallen, but also a reflection of a unique moment in history: a time when East and West were still present together in the same space.

Decades later, leaders such as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Prince Edward, Duke of Kent also paid their respects here.

For the same reason.

Budapest mellett található Magyarország egyetlen Commonwealth War Graves Commission katonai temetője.

Solymáron 211 szövetséges repülős nyugszik, akik a második világháború során Magyarország feletti légi harcokban vesztették életüket.

A háború után a szétszórtan eltemetett katonákat egy közös sírkertbe helyezték át. A temetőt 1947-ben hozták létre, és május 2-án, nagyszabású katonai tiszteletadás mellett avatták fel.

Az eseményen jelen voltak a kor legfontosabb politikai és katonai vezetői: magyar részről többek között Tildy Zoltán köztársasági elnök és Nagy Ferenc miniszterelnök, a szövetségesek részéről pedig amerikai, brit és szovjet tábornokok és diplomaták.

Ez a temető nemcsak a háború áldozatainak emlékhelye, hanem a háború utáni világpolitika egyik lenyomata is: itt még egyszerre volt jelen Kelet és Nyugat.

Évtizedekkel később olyan vezetők is tiszteletüket tették itt, mint Margaret Thatcher és Prince Edward, kenti herceg.

Ők is ugyanazért jöttek.

At 11:46 p.m., over Lake Balaton, a dying pilot saved his crew.

On the night of 3 April 1944, at 8:44 p.m., the Wellington Mk.X bomber (LN858) took off from RAF Amendola, near Foggia, Italy.

The crew of the aircraft, flying under the code JN-Y, were:

Pilot: Sgt. George Gordon Pemberton (RAFVR – 1388192)
Navigator: Sgt. Lawrence London Taylor (RAFVR – 1507789)
Air Bomber: Sgt. W. R. Bennet (RAFVR – 1603385)
Wireless Operator / Air Gunner: Fl/Sgt. Harry Cadwallader Redpath (RAAF – AUS410285)
Air Gunner: Sgt. Anthony Patrick McTeer (RAFVR – 1676580)

Their target was the arms and aircraft manufacturing facilities of the Weiss Manfréd Works in Budapest.
A total of 79 Wellingtons and 8 Liberators took part in the night raid.

At 11:46 p.m., Oblt. Hans Krause, flying a Dornier Do 217 N night fighter, intercepted Wellington LN858 over Lake Balaton.

Despite being seriously wounded, Sergeant Pemberton managed to ditch the aircraft on the waters of Lake Balaton. He died shortly after from severe blood loss.

With this act, he saved the lives of the other crew members.

He is buried in the British Military Cemetery in Solymár, grave I.A.10.

Sérülései ellenére Pemberton őrmesternek sikerült a gépet a Balaton vizére letennie. Nem sokkal később súlyos vérveszteség következtében életét vesztette.

Ezzel a tettével megmentette a személyzet többi tagját a biztos haláltól.

Sírja a solymári brit katonai temetőben található (I.A.10).
