Mi, Mester Tamás, a Budapesti Zsidó Hitközség (BZSH) elnöke és Radnóti Zoltán főrabbi, a Budapesti Rabbiság igazgatója kötelességünknek tartjuk, hogy a péntekre tervezett budapesti, ún. pro-Hamász megmozdulás kapcsán egy olyan súlyos kérdésre hívjuk fel a figyelmet, amely mellett nem mehetünk el szó nélkül.
Aggodalommal tölt el bennünket, hogy az Izrael és a zsidó-keresztény kultúra elpusztítására irányuló mozgalom propagandája – a Hussam Abu Safieh szabadon bocsátását követelők révén - nyilvánosságot kaphat Budapest utcáin, és ez alkalommal sem pusztán a politikai szimpátia kérdése merül fel. Vajon arról van szó, hogy úgy állnak ki egy vitatott egyén érdekében, hogy közben tisztában vannak az ellene felhozott súlyos vádakkal?
A béke, az emberi élet védelme és az ártatlan civilek iránti együttérzés önmagában nem lehet vita tárgya. Azért emeljük fel a hangunkat, mert a BZSH szerint a gyülekezési és szólásszabadság nem lehet erkölcsi mentség a terror dicsőítésére, a gyilkos és öngyilkos merényletek relativizálására, valamint a nem-zsidó és zsidó közösség megfélemlítésére.
A Talmud azt tanítja: „a bölcsek növelik a békét a világban” (Bráhot 64a) – ez azt jelenti, a békéhez nem elegendő a passzív hallgatás! Két lábbal a földön állva kell különbséget tennünk a gyanú, a vád, a bizonyított tény és a politikai propaganda között.
Feladatunk, hogy hangsúlyozzuk a tények megismerésének fontosságát, és ne engedjük, hogy jóhiszemű emberek együttérzését, ismerethiányát bárki manipulációra használja. A héber Biblia általános tanítása egyértelmű: gyűlöletre ne gyűlölettel válaszoljunk – „Ne állj bosszút, és ne tarts haragot […] szeresd felebarátodat, mint önmagadat” (3Mózes 19:18). Ezért fontos nyitott szemmel járnunk a világban, és széles látókörrel értelmezni a minket körülvevő politikai folyamatokat. Mindannyiunk biztonsága azt követeli, hogy a jószándék mellé józanság, az együttérzés mellé felelősség, a közös békevágy mellé pedig a valóság megismerése társuljon. Mert aki valóban a béke oldalán áll, annak a terrorizmus minden formájára következetesen nemet kell mondania.
A mai napig emlékszünk Karácsony Gergely főpolgármester 2023 októberében elhangzott szavaira, miszerint Budapesten nincs helye Hamászt támogató demonstrációnak! Ezért ösztönözzük a jóérzésű magyar állampolgárokat, nem-zsidókat és zsidókat egyaránt, hogy – amennyiben a szervezők megkapják a hivatalos engedélyt - csatlakozzanak az augusztus 21-i békés ellentüntetéshez.

We, Tamás Mester, President of the Budapest Jewish Community (BZSH), and Chief Rabbi Zoltán Radnóti, Director of the Budapest Rabbinate, consider it our duty to draw attention to a grave matter regarding the so-called pro-Hamas demonstration planned for Friday in Budapest, which we cannot allow to pass without comment.
We are deeply concerned that the propaganda of a movement aimed at the destruction of Israel and Judeo-Christian culture - through those demanding the release of Hussam Abu Safieh - could gain publicity on the streets of Budapest, and on this occasion, it is not merely a question of political sympathy. Is it a case of standing up for a controversial individual whilst being fully aware of the serious allegations brought against him?
Peace, the protection of human life, and empathy for innocent civilians should not, in themselves, be subject to debate. We are raising our voices because, in the view of the BZSH, freedom of assembly and speech cannot serve as a moral justification for glorifying terror, relativising murderous and su***de attacks, or intimidating the non-Jewish and Jewish communities.
The Talmud teaches: "scholars increase peace in the world" (Berakhot 64a) - this means that passive silence is not enough for peace. Standing firmly on the ground, we must distinguish between suspicion, accusation, proven fact, and political propaganda.
It is our duty to emphasise the importance of uncovering the facts and to prevent anyone from manipulating the goodwill and lack of information of well-meaning people. The general teaching of the Hebrew Bible is clear: we must not respond to hatred with hatred - Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge [...] love your neighbour as yourself" (Lev 19:18). It is therefore vital to walk through the world with our eyes open and to interpret the political processes around us with a broad perspective. The safety of us all demands that goodwill be coupled with sobriety, empathy with responsibility, and our shared desire for peace with an understanding of reality. Because anyone who truly stands on the side of peace must consistently say no to all forms of terrorism.
To this day, we recall the words of the Mayor of Budapest Gergely Karácsony in October 2023, stating that there is no place in Budapest for any demonstration supporting Hamas. We therefore encourage well-meaning Hungarian citizens, both non-Jewish and Jewish alike, to join the peaceful counter-demonstration on 21 August provided the organisers receive official permission.
