The Great Orthodox Synagogue Budapest

The construction of the Great Orthodox Synagogue in Budapest began in 1909 and was
completed in 1913. With this, construction began.

After the Jews of Pest split into three branches at the end of the 19th century, the idea of building an Orthodox synagogue in Elizabeth City came to mind in 1909. The site of Kazinczy Street, owned by the Pest Autonomous Orthodox Jewish Community, was designated as a suitable site for construction. On June 25, the same year, the elders of the community announced the application for the design of

a complete building complex, which included, besides the synagogue, a community headquarters, a kindergarten, a school and a public kitchen. Among the entries received by the deadline of November 1, the jury selected the designs of József Porgesz and Sándor Skultetzky, Emil Ágoston, Sándor Löffler and Béla Löffler. At the end of the second round of the competition in April 1910, the committee recommended the work of Porgesz and Skultetzky to be carried out, but the community, in May overruled the decision, accepted the application of the Löffler brothers. 650,000 crowns were set aside for the construction costs, and the detailed design documentation of Sándor Löffler and Béla was approved on November 8, 1910. The first part of the building complex, the school and communal headquarters on the back of the plot, was completed in 1911 and handed over in 1912. Construction of the synagogue began in the spring of 1912, and after construction was delayed, and probably the budget was running out faster than expected, in July 1913 the Löffler brothers submitted a design change to a more ornate and less demanding main facade. The building was completed and the official commissioning permit was issued on September 29, 1913. The Kazinczy Street Synagogue has become the religious-cultural center of the Orthodox branch of Pest Jewry. From 1928, the mikveh (ritual bath) functioned in the building until the blood-thirsty 1940s (it was only reopened in 2004). The building was located in the area of the Pest ghetto between 1944 and 1945 and was damaged by World War II and some of the equipment was destroyed. After 1945 the building complex was restored and the equipment was reconstructed. Over the following decades, the physical synagogue of the Great Synagogue deteriorated, first becoming unheated and then dangerous by the end of the 20th century. The Israeli community received the ground floor tract of ELTE's adjacent Teacher Training College. A small, modern house of worship, the Sas-Chevra Synagogue, was built here by Sándor Bokor, a community engineer. The Great Synagogue can be visited for an entrance fee.

This appointment reflects a vital recognition: antisemitism is not a problem of the past – it is a threat we face today, in Europe and beyond. The recent tragedy in Washington, where two Israeli diplomats were murdered following incitement under the slogan “Free Palestine,” is a painful reminder of the urgency.

In such times, leadership matters. Decisions matter.
Minister Bóka’s appointment is not only symbolic – it represents commitment, responsibility, and moral strength.

We stand ready to support this important mission and to work together for the safety, dignity, and future of Jewish communities everywhere.

Magyarország Kormánya továbbra is rendíthetetlenül kiáll az antiszemitizmus minden formájával szemben

Orbán Viktor miniszterelnök úrtól az antiszemitizmus elleni fellépés koordinálására kaptam megbízást.

Miniszterelnöki megbízottként feladatom, hogy intézkedési javaslatokat dolgozzak ki az Európai Unió szerte riasztóan erősödő antiszemitizmus visszaszorítása érdekében.

Antiszemitizmus elleni küzdelemért felelős koordinátorként kapcsolatot tartok fenn az érintett európai, és nemzetközi szereplőkkel, az Európai Unió intézményeivel.

Célom, hogy az uniós tapasztalataimra alapozva, aktív és tudatos, párbeszédet ösztönző kommunikációval, hazai és nemzetközi kezdeményezésekkel előmozdítsam az antiszemitizmus elleni fellépést.

Magyarország Kormánya hosszú ideje zéró toleranciát alkalmaz az antiszemita jelenségekkel és megnyilvánulásokkal szemben.

A sokszínű és életteli magyarországi zsidó közösségek biztonságát garantáljuk, tevékenységüket támogatjuk. Felelősséget érzünk minden európai zsidó közösség biztonságáért és boldogulásáért, mert az európai zsidó élet közös európai örökségünk része.

Nem ígérek csodát. De ígérek együttműködést, kiállást, apró lépéseket előre.

Over the past two weeks, as thousands of visitors made their way to the gravesite of Rabbi Yeshaya of Kerestir, a powerful historical exhibition was launched in the heart of Budapest’s Jewish Quarter — marking 80 years since the Holocaust of Hungarian Jewry.
Hosted at the Orthodox Community Center, this exhibition is the first step toward the creation of the Or Olam Museum — a national project dedicated to documenting, commemorating, and sharing the story of Hungary’s Orthodox Jewish community before, during, and after the Holocaust.

With the support of the Hungarian government and key partners, this initiative brings back the voice of Orthodox Jewry into Hungary’s collective memory — not only as a testimony of pain, but as a story of faith, resilience, and enduring Jewish life.

Thousands have already visited and were deeply moved by its message.

בעקבות ביטול טיסות לישראל והמצב הביטחוני, הקהילה האורתודוקסית בבודפשט הקימה חמ״ל חירום קהילתי, שנועד להעניק מענה ראשוני ומקיף לאורחים הרבים שלא הצליחו לשוב לביתם.

מוקד החמ״ל ממוקם בבית הכנסת הגדול “בית יוסף – קאזינצי”, ונציגי הקהילה נמצאים במקום לאורך כל שעות היום – לקבל, לכוון, ולעזור.

בימים האחרונים זרמו אלפי אורחים אל מרכז הקהילה האורתודוקסית בבודפשט, לרגל יום ההילולא של הצדיק ר׳ ישעיה מקרעסטיר זי״ע.

ההיערכות לקראת ההילולא נעשתה במשך שבועות – עם פתיחת בית הכנסת הגדול, מערך הכנסת אורחים מסביב לשעון, ותפילות מרוממות בכל בתי המדרש, ובין היתר בבית המדרש "חברה ש"ס" שבמרכז הקהילה.

מרגש ממש, מאות סטודנטים מכל העולם באירוע פתיחה של שבתון מיוחד של ארגון חב״ד בקמפוס העולמי. זה פעם ראשונה בהיסטוריה שאירוע כזה מתרחש בבית כנסת הגדול אורתודוקסי.

Ma, október 7-én, emlékezünk arra a napra, amikor Izraelt kegyetlen és barbár terrortámadás érte Gázából és gyermekeket, fiatalokat és időseket mészároltak le. Több mint 1,145 ember vesztette életét, 3,300-an sebesültek meg és több, mint 251 embert raboltak el.

Tegyünk ma eggyel több micvát az áldozatok lelki üdvéért, a sebesültek gyógyulásáért, a túszok megmentéséért, és imádkozunk a katonáink biztonságáért, akik életüket kockáztatják szent földünk védelmében.
