UMVIM Haiti

UMVIM Haiti The EMH VIM Program Many of the early projects were begun in direct response to the devastating earthquake of January 2010.

In October 2010, the Board of Directors of the General Board of Global Ministries approved the Haiti Response Plan to work with the Eglise Methodiste d'Haiti(EMH, Methodist Church of Haiti) to host volunteer teams to address the humanitarian needs and priority projects of the EMH.

This past March Haitian youth from the village of Tapion joined a combined team of Virginia university students and UMVIM volunteers from Virginia and New York to establish two tree nurseries in Tapion and Vialet in Petit Goave Circuit, Haiti.

Tapion youth cleared the land and prepared bags of soil for the seeds at the Tapion nursery site. The youth received training based on the Trees for the Future model to provide them with skills to care for the nursery. Within three weeks, the Tapion youth had expanded the nursery to include a variety of tree seedlings that will be sold or donated to community members.

Volunteers stayed at the Vialet campus where they prepared the nursery site. Moringa oleifera seeds were planted in this nursery. Moringa seedlings will produce nutritious leaves that are valuable both as human food and forage for goats to eat.

Community members decide the strategy for distributing the seedlings. Some communities distribute to farmers to plant alongside their crops (agroforestry) while other communities may dedicate a single field to plant all the trees. As trees grow they help maintain soil, improve the environment and (some) produce income.

We need your suggestions UMVIM, please. So of the 15 sites that the EMH VIM Office has visited in the past 4 weeks, 12 of them need general, dental, and eye doctors. This seems to be a fairly common need. Please leave suggestions for service, for find additional teams, and positive ways forward, below. Your experience is a blessing.

During our site visit to the Cap Haitien Circuit, we were very happy to see how much positive progress the EMH sites have made over the years. Pictured here are 2 students from a kindergarten class in Renquite, counting from 1 to 100 in French. The class is held in the EMH church during the day. A VIM team can hold teacher trainings, teach hygiene to students, and organize a scholarship fund. This location has one class of 12 students.

For those God has called to positively affect education in developing countries, this project is for you. The community of Dori currently serves 300 students in our primary school with 8 teachers. The students receive lunch 3 days a week. The space for a secondary school has been constructed and provides for 9 additional classrooms. All that remains is for a roof to be funded and installed on this space.

Currently, children have no accessible secondary education in this community. Upon the addition of a roof for the secondary school, 25 students will begin their studies as the first class of the Dori Secondary School in Les Cayes.

We are excited to share our Les Cayes site visit experience with you all in our May newsletter. We were able to visit 9 sites across the circuit. We assessed needs of the Methodist church and surrounding community at each site with photo, video, and interviews.

The issues we addressed range from construction to agriculture, jobs, education, health, water access and clean water. The image shared here is of two students checking on their seedlings for planting at the Salomon Agricultural Institute in Les Cayes. Salomon has 26 students, 6 professors and are doing amazing work.

Construction continues for the new sanctuary at Joseph, (near Jeremie). It looks like the sanctuary including doors, windows, and pews should be complete by June 1. All that remains after that is to install the cistern and connect it to the inside toilet and to the outside toilet (The Lew with a view). via David Draeger

Greetings all! I will do site visits to Jeremie, Les Cayes, and la Gonave during the next 4 weeks. We will check on current construction projects and assess needs for future work in these areas around water, agriculture, orphanages, health, and more. If you have any recommendations for needs or sites I should visit, your input would be very helpful to our planning. Sites they are farther out from the campus I will stay a few days in each and want to maximize my time there. Thank you and God bless.
