GOSPEL OF THE DAY
John 3:13-17

No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man.

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up,

that whoever believes in him may have eternal life."

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

REFLECTION

On this Feast of the Holy Cross, Jesus tells Nicodemus the Son of Man must be lifted up, as Moses lifted the serpent in the desert. All who look upon Him with faith will be saved. "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes might have eternal life."

The cross is Christianity's ultimate paradox. An instrument of torture becomes the throne of the King of kings. What the world sees as defeat, heaven reveals as victory. Jesus is not dragged to Calvary; He freely ascends. His lifting up is simultaneously His exaltation — the moment God's love is most fully displayed.

To exalt the cross is not to glorify suffering for its own sake but to recognize that God transforms even the worst evil into redemptive good. Every cross we carry — illness, loss, injustice — becomes salvific when united to Christ's. We do not merely endure; through Him, we participate in the world's redemption.

Merciful Lord, You have forgiven me debts I could never repay. Soften my heart so that I may extend the same boundless mercy to everyone who has offended me, as You have pardoned me.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
Matthew 18:21-35

Then Peter came up and said to him, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?"

Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.

"Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants.

When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents;

and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.

So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, `Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.'

And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.

But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, `Pay what you owe.'

So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, `Have patience with me, and I will pay you.'

He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt.

When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place.

Then his lord summoned him and said to him, `You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me;

and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?'

And in anger his lord delivered him to the jailers, till he should pay all his debt.

So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart."

REFLECTION

Peter asks how many times he must forgive — seven times? Jesus replies: seventy times seven. He tells of a servant forgiven an astronomical debt who then refuses to forgive a fellow servant a trivial sum. The king hands the merciless servant over until his debt is paid.

The contrast is staggering. Ten thousand talents is deliberately absurd — an unpayable sum representing our sin before God. A hundred denarii is real but small. Compared to what God has forgiven us, every offense against us is minor. Withholding mercy after receiving it is a monstrous contradiction.

Forgiveness is not optional for the Christian; it is the mark of one who has truly encountered divine mercy. This does not mean excusing harm, but releasing the claim to vengeance and entrusting justice to God. The measure of our forgiveness reveals how deeply we grasp the forgiveness we ourselves have received.
