What is a Christian?

1 Thessalonians 1:4-10 (KJV)
4 Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.
5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.
6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost.
7 So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.
8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.
9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

To be a Christian means that you believe something, follow something, live something, and devotedly follow something. A Christian is a “fully devoted follower of Jesus.” It doesn’t happen by accident and it requires conversion of the heart.

Nothing Can Separate Us from the Love of God

Romans 8:31-39 (KJV)
31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.
34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Because of the work of Christ, we are forever God’s children and forever loved by Him no matter what. We learned that all of creation experience pain and discomfort in affliction eagerly waiting the glorification of God’s children. So in Romans 8:31–39, according to Paul, there is no place for disagreement.

If God is for us, who can be against us? The word “if” translates the Greek conditional particle “el”, signifying a fulfilled condition, not a mere possibility. The meaning of the first clause is therefore “Because God is for us.”

Overcoming Procrastination

The greatest danger in the Christian life is not outright rebellion: it’s quiet procrastination. It’s the quiet voice that says, “Tomorrow… later… someday…” But the Bible says that to procrastinate is a sin. It is delayed disobedience dressed up as wisdom.

James 4:13-17 (KJV)
13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Christ is Supreme: The Christian’s Supreme Boast

Jeremiah 9:23-24 (KJV)
23 Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:
24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord.

We need to know, that nothing matters except Christ. That’s painful because we look to our idols, anything that comes before God, to give us meaning and significance. We hate the idea of giving them up because we fear we’d be nothing without them.

Let Your Light Shine

Matthew 5:14-16 (KJV)
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

As our world grows darker, the need for light increases. In the Bible, light is designated as truth and goodness; darkness is used to characterize evil and deception; hell is described as a place of outer darkness; and the devil is called the prince of darkness. The Bible says God is light, and that in Him is no darkness at all. Jesus came to bring light to people in darkness.

The Precious Gift of Christmas

Luke 2:10-11 (KJV)
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

As we celebrate Christmas today, may we remember that we can have Christmas without gifts, without Santa, elves, or reindeer. We can have Christmas without trees, lights and stockings. But we can't have Christmas without Christ.

Christmas and the Cause of Truth

John 18:37 (KJV)
Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

The uniqueness of Christ’s birth is implied; the purpose of his birth is given; and the pre-condition of approving that purpose is mentioned. And the precondition of approving that purpose, that is, the thing that enables a person to agree that Jesus testifies to the truth, that person is "of the truth."

When Profit Is Loss

Mark 8:36 (KJV)
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Christ taught that it is possible for a man to gain and still lose. A secure soul is more eternally valuable than the most profitable portfolio in the world. The Lord Jesus measures the success of a life by very different standards than the world.

The Horrors of Hell

Luke 16:19-31 (KJV)
19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:
28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost. Save them from what? From sin, no doubt, but he came to save mankind from the horrors of Hell.

The Exceptions of Salvation

John 3:1-7(KJV)
1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

There are many times in the Bible when God says, “except.” Except means no exceptions; and when God says no exceptions, He means just that. One of the more notable “excepts” in the Bible has to do with the new birth or being saved.

There is only one way of salvation and that is through the finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ at Calvary.
