Weekly Lectionary Reflection - Matthew 9:35-10:8
"God's Ongoing Mission" - Pastor Timothy

As Jesus’ ministry spread across Judea, more needs emerged. Jesus described them as “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Jesus was not only referring to the people of God as sheep, but he was also describing the situation they faced, of their dignity being stripped, and their life tossed away cheaply.

when Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, curing every disease and every sickness. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few." The harvest here refers to the blessing of God’s saving work—his healing, deliverance, and life-giving power for those exploited by the Romans and abandoned by the religious leaders.

The harvest is not the people themselves, but God’s blessings for the people.

The church must avoid objectifying and reducing those in need as a “harvest” to be collected and reaped, but we are called to serve and care for them, so that their life and dignity are restored.

If we understand that we are commissioned to participate in God’s ongoing mission, we learn to surrender and obey. It is not about how we want things to happen in the ministry, but how much we understand God’s mission and vision for each of us. When we know that it’s not about us, the pressure to succeed is lifted, and we also become free from the trap of ego: on one hand, letting go of the need to claim all the credit, and on the other, letting go of the habit of absorbing all the blame.

God does not target a particular type of people for his ministry, but people coming from diverse backgrounds and capabilities. Among the twelve disciples of Jesus, they had different jobs, and they were still active with their trade when following Jesus. In the same way, the harvest is not limited to a religious setting only, but also in every aspect of our life. Therefore, regardless of what we do and who we are, we can also participate in God’s harvest.

There is always a start for everything. Every one of us can be used by God.

Weekly Lectionary Reflection - "A Mutual Effort of Love"
Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26 - Pastor Timothy

In the passage, it appears that Jesus was calling Matthew to follow him, but later it was Jesus who was following Matthew to his home and eating with other sinners and tax collectors. While the Pharisees were concerned about religious and objective piety, Jesus’ decisions are motivated by mercy towards those who don’t deserve it. Jesus did not overlook their sins, but he chose to relate and respond differently.

The healing Jesus offered Matthew was his companionship and his willingness to engaged in his life. There are times when we are eager to offer solutions to others, but maybe the best healing is the moment when one is being understood, heard, and seen.

Later, the nameless woman who suffered from hemorrhage was saying to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be made well.” According to the Jewish Law, she was considered unclean and would have lived in social and economic isolation. However, Jesus disagreed with the perspective of the Jewish Law, and he reversed the flow of the holiness and impurity. Instead, his healing and divinity flow to those who are unclean. He is not worried about being “contaminated”; rather, by making himself available, he allows those who believe in him to tap into his divinity that brings healing and transformation.

After touching Jesus, she was healed. Jesus complimented her faith: “Your faith has made you well.” This faith transcends social and religious norms. She became clean by breaking the purity code. The synagogue leader as well. He did not seek help from the Pharisees or priests, but he chose the controversial, young, and borderline-cultish Jesus. For the father and the woman, it was in their hopelessness that they became courageous enough to cross religious boundaries and leap into this absurd faith in God.

We may have our own reluctance to let go of our beliefs, principles, and way of life, but today we are challenged to leap into this flow of divine energy, to experience God’s healing and mercy.

Weekly Lectionary Reflection - "Trinity: A Journey of Oneness"
Matthew 28:16-20 - Pastor Timothy

Christian faith calls us to recognize the presence of God and the reign of God behind what we experience and see in reality. The Greek word for authority does not mean ruling power; contrary to ruling, it represents autonomy and liberty to live and to act. Jesus empowers his disciples and each of us: even though the rulers of the world seek to define us and confine us, we have the power and authority from God to live as if God is ruling in this world.

A disciple is a learner who also follows Jesus’ way and teaching. The core of Jesus’ teaching is love: to love our God and to love our neighbors as ourselves, making God’s reign tangible and visible in the here and now. Through being baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, we join the union of the Trinitarian God and into the community of Christ’s followers, in which we practice and mature our faith.

Trinity Sunday reminds us again that our God is a relational God. Therefore, our faith is a relational faith. A relational faith is a process of giving and receiving, inviting and responding, doubting and believing.

The oneness we see in God is not a finished product but an ongoing process of love. when we say our God is a Triune God, we can understand that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit never stop loving each other and working through each other. So, when we say our faith is also a relational faith, it means we, as Christians, never stop loving and knowing God, ourselves, and others.

Trinity Sunday reminds us that our faith is a relationship that requires us to put in effort and cultivate. It does not matter if you can fully understand the Trinity in one sermon. Through Christ, we come to know about the Creator and the Spirit, and gradually, the Trinitarian God. It is a journey and it takes time, but this understanding leads us into deeper commitment to love, not only God but also others.

May we all experience God’s abundant grace and transforming power as we commit to love and witness. Amen.

Weekly Lectionary Reflection - Matthew 28:1-10
"Easter Hope: Fear and Joy" - Pastor Timothy

Throughout history, the church has developed doctrines unpacking this truth, but for Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, it was a roller-coaster encounter with the risen Lord.

An angel appeared in front of the guards and the two Marys, removing the stone blocking the entrance of the tomb. Before the stone was removed, Jesus was already resurrected. The stone was removed for us as a witness and an invitation to experience the mystery of the resurrection.

We are all invited to enter the tomb too. Are we willing to step into the tomb? Even though they did not experience Jesus’ physical pain themselves, it took great courage to witness his crucifixion. These women refused to be threatened and stayed as close as they could. Therefore, they were the ones to witness Christ’s resurrection.

If Jesus' suffering means nothing to us, his resurrection stays irrelevant too. Likewise, if we're unwilling to walk his path of crucifixion, how will we experience resurrection and renewal?

The news of the resurrection is mixed with fear and excitement. The women were in great shock and they were entrusted with a mission to spread the news to his disciples. Their fear came not only from what they saw outside the tomb, but also from fear of the Jews, the soldiers, and the possibility that the disciples would not believe them. However, the good news and joy were so overwhelming that, with Jesus’ comfort, they overcame their fear.

The resurrection challenges us to take risks. It is a life-changing power that empowers us to overcome our fear and to live out our mission, even when the world finds it difficult to understand. It is always scary to take risks, but as we begin to move, Jesus will meet us along the way to comfort us and journey with us.

Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia!

May we all encounter the resurrected Lord along our way of living and being.

Hub Breakfast has quietly become one of the most precious rhythms in our church life. Over coffee and whatever people bring, we’re learning that faith doesn’t just grow through sermons, but through slow, honest conversation around a table. ☕🍞

So far, we’ve sat with big questions like:
* The Eucharist
* Salvation
* “If love, why hell?”
* What is Sin?

No one had to agree, but everyone was invited to think and share💬

Small, simple, sometimes messy — but this is where a living, thinking faith is taking shape🌱
