Supporting the Future of the Church! 🙏✨

Members of the Serra Club of Hong Kong had the privilege of attending the Hong Kong Diocese Altar Servers’ Association Annual General Meeting and Mass this afternoon at the Church of St. Benedict, Sha Tin.

First established in 1986 under the guidance of Fr. Alfred Deignan, S.J., the Hong Kong Diocese Altar Servers' Association plays a vital role in our local church, acting as a crucial bridge between individual parish altar server guilds and the broader Diocese. Beyond coordinating the young servers who assist at major diocesan celebrations — such as Ordinations and Chrism Masses — it serves as a powerful "cradle of vocations," nurturing young hearts to listen closely to God's call.

Highlights from the afternoon:
▪️New Leadership: We welcomed the incoming 2026/2027 Chairperson, Stephen Anthony Wong, and his committee.
▪️ Serra Cup Presentation: A major highlight of the meeting was when our very own Serra Club President for 2026/27, Serran John Wong, was invited to the front to present the prestigious Serra Cup (Pui Shing Cup) and winning medallions to the reigning champions of the Inter-Parish Football Match: St. Margaret's Church! 🏆⚽️
▪️Church Tour: Incoming Chairperson Stephen and preceding Chairperson Andrew treated our Serrans to a wonderful guided tour of St. Benedict Church.

The inspiring afternoon concluded with a beautiful Eucharistic celebration led by His Eminence Cardinal Stephen Chow, reminding us all of the vital role these young people play in our faith community. As Serrans, seeing the devotion of these altar servers fills our hearts with immense hope for the future of our Diocese!

A big thank you to the Altar Servers’ Association for the warm invitation. Please enjoy these highlights from this afternoon's event. 📸👇

Celebrating the Feast of St. Junípero Serra! ✨

Today, 28/8/2026, the Serra Club of Hong Kong gathered at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Wanchai for our patronal Feast Day Mass. It was a blessed evening of prayer, reflection, and community.

Our Chaplain, Vicar General Father Joseph Chan Wing-Chiu, delivered an inspiring homily. He began by tracing the life and journey of St. Junípero Serra, the 18th-century Franciscan friar known as the "Apostle of California." St. Junípero left everything to tirelessly establish missions, courageously defending indigenous people and spreading the Gospel with his famous motto: ¡Siempre adelante y nunca retroceder! (Always forward, never back!).

Because of his relentless missionary zeal and dedication to bringing Christ to new lands, he was chosen as the global patron saint of Serra International when the organization was founded in 1935. Today, his spirit continues to guide Serrans worldwide in our core mission. Father Joseph beautifully connected the saint's legacy to the vital objectives of the Serra Club: to pray for, foster, and affirm vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

We were also happy to welcome many friends and visitors who are not yet Serrans. Your presence enriched our celebration! We hope you were moved by the powerful mission of our club and will consider joining our global family to support our priests and religious brothers and sisters.

Let us continue to move "always forward" in faith and prayer.

"The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest." ( Matthew 9:37-38) 🌾🙏

Serra Club of Hong Kong – Celebrating Father John‑Baptist Tsang’s 89th Birthday 🎉

25/8/2026: Following our August Board of Directors Meeting, we joyfully gathered to celebrate the 89th birthday of our beloved former Chaplain, Father John‑Baptist Tsang.

For over 40 years, Father Tsang faithfully guided the Serra Club of Hong Kong, nurturing our mission to pray for, encourage, and support vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. Even after stepping down, he continues to inspire us as our life‑long Honorary Advisor.

More than two dozen Serrans, spouses, and friends, together with our current Chaplain, Vicar General Father Joseph Chan Wing‑Chiu, joined in fellowship at the birthday dinner. Heartfelt messages of gratitude were shared by our President, John Wong, expressing the Club’s deep appreciation for Father Tsang’s dedication and witness.

🌟 We give thanks for Father Tsang’s life and ministry, and we pray that his example will continue to encourage vocations and strengthen our Serra mission. With joy and anticipation, we look forward to celebrating his 90th birthday next year!

18/8/2026: What a beautifully blessed evening of prayer, fellowship, and divine inspiration at tonight’s Serra Club of Hong Kong’s General Meeting!

🙏 SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT FIRST
We began our gathering in the best way possible - seeking the Lord’s grace. At 6:35 pm, our Chaplain, Father Joseph Chan, VG, celebrated a beautiful pre-meeting Mass. As Serrans, our hearts beat for our priests and religious leaders; praying together with Father Joseph reminded us of our vital mission to support and affirm the ministerial priesthood.

🎂 LONGEVITY AND JOYFUL FELLOWSHIP
Following Mass, the room filled with laughter and warm wishes as we celebrated our August birthday stars! 🥳 We surprised our celebrants with a spectacular birthday cake crowned with traditional sugar longevity buns (長壽桃), sending them collective prayers for abundant happiness and a long, healthy life.

🎵 A GUEST FEATURE: A GIFT FROM GOD
The highlight of our meeting was a captivating talk by an ex-Serran who is making waves in Catholic higher education: Professor Annie Bligh, Provost of Saint Francis University (SFU). Speaking on the topic “SFU Choir - A Gift from God,” Professor Bligh took us on an incredible journey through the choir’s origins. Formed just a couple of years ago, the choir's humble beginnings - built on rigorous practice and a vision of cultural exchange - culminated in an extraordinary inaugural concert.

But the ultimate "Gift from God" was their unforgettable pilgrimage to Italy! Professor Bligh shared how their dedication led them all the way to Rome and the Vatican. The room was spellbound as she described the monumental moment the choir participated in a Papal Audience in St. Peter's Square. As Pope Leo XIV’s motorcade entered, the SFU Choir proudly harmonised faith and culture, beautifully singing "Below the Lion Rock” (獅子山下) in Cantonese directly for the Holy Father!

⚓ THE SERRAN CONNECTION
Professor Bligh’s testimony was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. The SFU Choir serves as a vivid example of youth faith formation in action. By bringing young voices into the heart of the Church, music becomes a fertile ground for youth to hear God's whisper and discern His sacred call.

Thank you, Professor Annie Bligh, for inspiring us to keep marching forward in our mission to nurture, sustain, and celebrate Catholic vocations across Hong Kong!

✨ “I will sing of your mercy forever, Lord, proclaim your faithfulness through all ages.” (Psalm 89:1)

A Blessed Beginning to a New Serra Year!✨

On 21 July 2026, members of the Serra Club of Hong Kong gathered for our first monthly General Meeting of the 2026–2027 term. We kicked off the new Serra year by celebrating the Holy Mass at the Cathedral, followed by warm fellowship and a joyful birthday celebration for our July Serrans at Caritas Restaurant. 🎂

We were deeply blessed to welcome Father Edward Chau King-Fun (周景勳神父) as our distinguished guest speaker. Ordained in 1980, Father Chau currently serves at St. Margaret’s Church and heads the Philosophy and Religious Studies Departments at Holy Spirit Seminary College. Renowned for his interreligious dialogue, poetry, and ability to weave Chinese cultural imagery into Catholic spirituality, Father Chau shared a profound reflection on the "3-Step Spiritual Practice".

🗣️ Key Highlights from Father Chau’s Talk:

🕊️ REFLECTION: Cultivating inner silence and awareness to recognize God’s presence in our everyday lives.

🌿 INTEGRATION: Harmonizing our faith with our personal identity and cultural traditions, drawing rich wisdom from Chinese heritage.

🤝 ACTION: Living out our faith daily through concrete acts of charity, service, and active witness.

Father Chau reminded us that true spiritual growth requires a perfect balance between contemplation and action - deepening our relationship with God while engaging meaningfully with the world around us.

As we step into this new year of service, let us carry his message in our hearts and be inspired by Scripture:

📖 "Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect." (Romans 12:2)

21/6/2026: Today, our hearts overflow with gratitude as we celebrate a profound milestone for our local Church - the Ordination to Priesthood of Rev. Mark Nguyen, S.J.!

The moving and beautiful Ordination Mass took place at the historic St. Ignatius Chapel, solemnly led by Cardinal Stephen Chow, S.J. Members of Serra Club were present in the congregation, standing in solidarity to support, pray for, and witness Rev. Mark as he answered God’s sacred call.

As Serrans, our primary objectives are to foster and affirm vocations to the ministerial priesthood and vowed religious life. Witnessing a young man lay down his life for Christ’s flock is the ultimate fruit of our collective prayers, dedication, and work.

Rev. Mark’s "Yes" reminds us of the critical need to continually encourage our youth to listen closely to God's whisper. We invite our entire community to join us in praying for Rev. Mark as he begins his priestly ministry, that he may be granted strength, wisdom, and a heart modeled after the Good Shepherd.

Mary, Mother of Vocations, pray for us!
Saint Junípero Serra, pray for us!
