Holy Saturday is often called “Black Saturday” (especially in popular Filipino usage) because it reflects the darkness, silence, and mourning after Jesus’ death on Good Friday.

1. A Day of Darkness and Grief

After Jesus died, everything seemed lost. The disciples were afraid, confused, and grieving.

It is called “black” because:
• Hope seemed gone
• The world felt spiritually dark
• The Savior lay in the tomb

2. A Day of Silence

On Holy Saturday, the Church is very quiet:
• No Mass is celebrated during the day
• The altar is bare
• The tabernacle is empty

It is a day of waiting… a day of stillness.

3. A Day “In Between”

It is the space between:
• The sorrow of the Cross (Good Friday)
• The joy of the Resurrection (Easter Sunday)

So it feels like a “dark pause” in the story of salvation.

4. But Not Without Hope

Even if it is called “Black Saturday,” the Church reminds us: This darkness is not the end. Jesus is in the tomb—but He is already at work, bringing salvation even to the dead (cf. 1 Peter 3:19).

+++

“Black Saturday” teaches us something very human and very real: There are moments in life when we are waiting in darkness…when God seems silent.

But just like Holy Saturday—silence is not absence. God is still working.

And soon…the light of Easter will come.

READ | Holy Thursday is called “Maundy Thursday” because of the word “mandatum,” a Latin word meaning “commandment.”

This comes directly from what Jesus said during the Last Supper:

“A new commandment (mandatum) I give you: love one another as I have loved you.” (John 13:34)

On that night, Jesus did something very powerful—He washed the feet of His disciples. This was not just an act of kindness; it was a living example of His commandment to love through humble service.

So “Maundy Thursday” reminds us of two things:
1. The New Commandment – to love one another as Jesus loves us
2. The Example of Service – shown in the washing of the feet

In simple terms: It is called Maundy Thursday because Jesus gave us a commandment of love, and showed us how to live it.

And that is also the challenge for us today: Not just to talk about love—but to live it, serve it, and show it, especially to those who need it most.

Prayer to Saint Joseph

Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,
Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To you God entrusted his only Son;
in you Mary placed her trust;
with you Christ became man.

Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life.
Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage,
and defend us from every evil. Amen.
