Thoroughly Understanding the Four Noble Truths — The Body Is Suffering

The Buddha did not teach us to escape suffering, but taught us to have mindfulness (sati) to continuously know our own body and mind, to keep knowing honestly, without interfering.
Then our mind will begin to see reality. Looking again and again, looking continuously, finally the mind can accept reality. For example, we have mindfulness that continuously knows the body: when sitting, know; when standing, know; when walking, know; when lying down, know; when breathing out, know; when breathing in, know; when moving, know; when still, know. What we need to do is to train continuously, not to forget the body, and to keep knowing it without interruption.
Then we will see the reality of the body. The body is impermanent. After inhaling, one must exhale. It constantly has to change into all kinds of postures, changing again and again. When the body moves, that is also impermanent; when the body is still, that is also impermanent. When we have mindfulness that continuously knows the body, practising like this often, we will see the reality of the body — we will see that the body is impermanent and must keep changing.
Why does it have to change and move? Because it is being forced. After sitting for a long time it becomes painful, so one has to move the body and stand up to walk. When lying down one has to turn left and right. If you inhale and cannot exhale, there is suffering. If food is not expelled, there is also suffering. If there is mindfulness on the body, one discovers that the body is full of suffering, and it is impermanent and uncontrollable. For example, we hope it will not be hungry, not cold, not hot, not tired, not grow old, not die — yet we cannot command even one of these.
If we continuously know the body with mindfulness, we will see the reality of the body — it is not-self. It is constantly being pressed by suffering. We must keep moving the body in order to escape suffering.
One day when there is no more strength and we cannot move, we will feel great discomfort, because we cannot move the body, or because we cannot control it. If there is mindfulness that continuously knows the body, we will discover that the body is displaying the three characteristics. We let reality be seen, and then we will know that it goes completely against what we hope for.
We hope it will not grow old, not get sick, not die — yet the body only grows old, gets sick and dies, until the mind accepts reality. If the mind can accept reality and see that the body is not the true self and cannot be controlled; and that the body itself is already suffering, with only more or less of it — then practice is not for the sake of escaping pain, but for the sake of knowing, until the mind understands reality, understands what is ordinary and natural.
The body is natural and ordinary; it is impermanent. Keep knowing it continuously until the mind accepts reality. When the mind accepts reality, when we grow old we will feel that this is ordinary; it grows old because it is subject to change. When it gets sick or feels pain, we will also feel that this is ordinary — the body can feel pain and get sick; when it has to die we cannot prevent it, because it is not-self.
When the mind can accept reality and is able to see reality, then when we grow old we will not suffer. We will feel that it is an ordinary matter. When we get sick we will also feel it is ordinary. When we have to die we will also feel it is ordinary, because it is an ordinary thing.
If the mind can accept reality, without deceiving itself and without escaping reality, we will not suffer. We will grow old, get sick and die — this is an ordinary matter. With mindfulness we keep knowing the body and looking at it; at a certain point the mind will accept reality. The mind will not remain forever foolish, refusing reality.
This is regarding the body.
