“This year I took the opportunity to serve on a mission trip to Guatemala working with . This was my first mission trip so I didn’t know what to fully expect but only what I have heard. I believe most of our expectations are, “I’m ready to help these people!” But what can often be looked over is, “how they can help us?” This was the posture that God had placed in my heart.
Going into the trip with an open heart is something I strongly encourage. I saw brokenness, but I also saw so much joy. Just the smallest thing like handing a bandana to a child made them smile from ear to ear. Getting to interact with young adults at the God is First English Academy showed me just how far some go to learn English. Many take bus rides hours away to learn so they can get a good job, not to buy the luxuries of life but to help raise their family. Some were even endangered by the gangs they were enslaved to but still made it.
While building a wall for another school we worked side by side with several hard working locals. Picturing that and seeing God within it all shows me this is the way God intended us to live. Love on one another, work side by side helping others, have good conversations, pray, laugh, and cry with no complaining at all.
Allowing God to shape and mold me through this trip has set a new tone in my life and it’s this, “to love a little more.”” – John Steele
