As kids age out of the nursery, they can still receive speech therapy if they need it. Sometimes therapy was true therapy, but sometimes therapy is just hanging out and giving attention. You truly learn how much a smile or a hug can mean to a kid.

The caregivers at the orphanage are great and doing great work. However, they only have two hands and sometimes up to 15 kids in the nursery. Many children raised in orphanage settings experiencing delays in cognitive, social, and physical development, often due to a lack of consistent, nurturing caregiving, inadequate stimulation, and limited opportunities for attachment, leading to potential issues with learning, communication, and emotional regulation. While a developmental delay can occur in any child, the prevalence is much higher for children in group homes. Part of what I do at the orphanage is one on one time with each kid in the nursery. Depending on their needs, this could be speech or sensory activities, tummy time, or just some cuddles.

Missing these little faces. So excited to get back to the orphanage in a couple weeks and see who is still there. One of these friends left before I came back to the states and two others were supposed to leave the same week as me. They were getting placed with families and will, hopefully, be gone and happy in their new homes.

Sometimes home visits lead us to finding families to come to the clinic. We met a few of our families by chance this year either visiting their family members or just passing by. This friend's dad was waiting outside and waved us over as we passed by coming from another house. We ended up staying and talking to his dad for quite a while. A while later, this friend comes running through. I then got to tell him about our clinic and they came to visit us a few months later.

One of the best parts of visiting families, is forming relationships with theses families year after year. This friend was just a toddler when I met her. While I normally only get to see her a couple times a year at most, just showing up again and showing families that they matter and are important to you is often enough.

One of the best parts of what I do is visiting with families in their homes. We might visit with groups, take food and supplies, evangelize, or just go chat to help build relationships. This lovely lady was making tortillas for her grandkids when we were walking by. She gave the gringos a lesson on how to make tortillas and enjoyed laughing at our attempts.

Sensory activities don't always go as planned. This friend decided to join us when he saw we had sensory bins out. Because the kids we see vary in age and abilities, the majority of our sensory bins are taste safe. This curious friend decided to try his sensory bin just to learn that it was made of salt. He quickly had regrets.

The ages and needs of the children we invite to the clinic vary greatly. We have invited a 4 month old, and we have invited an 18 year old. Who is invited to each clinic depends on a variety of factors: space, severity of needs, caregivers available, who is bringing them, physical needs and wheelchair use, and family's availability. We have 4 rooms available to families with up to two families per room. Home visits and discussions with the families before planning each clinic helps us get to know each family, allowing us to invite families who can learn from each other and grow together.

One of our goals is to empower families and caregivers to adequately care for their families. Our second day is focused on education. Families learn about hand washing, tooth brushing, hydration, purified water, sensory integration, and more. Education in most areas in the mountains is very limited, as are resources. We try to provide the items and education needed to keep not only themselves healthy, but their whole family. Making small changes can make a huge difference in their health and wellbeing.
