Profile of Alhagie Ba Omar Manneh
After the destruction of the Kabu Empire a great number of Kabunkas migrated to different parts of Senegambia. eh Sutung studied the Qur'an and became a venerable religious leader who was well versed in the Qur'an and Islamic Studies. Manneh Sutung took a Serer woman by the name Mamma Kumba as wife and had three sons Ansu Kumba Manneh, Karamo Kumba Manneh and Kemo Kumba Manneh. They had a half brother from a differnt mother by the name of Suntu Manneh. Manneh Sutung founded Jinack Kajata Demba K***a. His third son Kemo Kumba Manneh commonly called Mama Kemo was named after the famous Muhammad Kanta Silmanka Jabbie of Fouta Touba in Guinea Conakry. During his childhood days he was sent to learn Quran and Islamic Studies at Kankan in Guinea Conakry under the tutelage of Foday Madi Kankan Hydara. After his graduation he came back to Jinack Kajata and engaged in the propagation of Islam. At the time the chief of Lower Nimi was Mamadi Binta Sonko of Essau. Mamadi Binta recommended him to the Commissioner of North Bank to appoint him as a member of the District tribunal. He served for some time in the tribunal but could not cope with the triviality of the cases and resigned. The commissioner refused to accept his resignation and this forced him to migrate with his family to Bakau. He was hosted by the Tamba K***a family of Bakau and had Talibes (students) from Niumi and Kombo under his care. He later married a second wife, Wula Bojang daugter of Mbanyimading Cham and Famaraba Bojang of Sukuta. Mbayimading Cham was the daugter of Nyima Jarry Bojang of Sukuta Jarry K***a and Foday Malick Barrowba Cham the 19th Alikalo of Sukuta and founder of Sukuta Barrow K***a. Mbaynimanding was married to Famaraba Bojang founder of Sukuta Tamba K***a. Famaraba Bojang was the son of Momodou Lamin Mbantomaba Bojang who was the son of Ousman Bojang who converted to Islam from Yundum. Famaraba's last daughter Wula Tamara Bojang was married to the revered marabout Mama Kemo Manneh of Bakau Tamba K***a. She had three children with him Alhagie Ba Omar Manneh, Amie Manneh and Saffie Manneh. During his childhood days as the practice religious masters send their own children to other masters to teach them Quran and Islamic studies, Alhagie Ba Omar Manneh was therefore sent to the venerable Sering Aba Bakar Baye in Sukuta to learn Quran and Islamic Studies. After the death of the great master in 1952 he moved to Tivaone in Senegal to further his education. He came back to the Gambai around 1967 and established the famous ''Ba Omar La Karantaa''. Since then Ba Omar La Karanta had been flourishing generation after generation until his death on thursday 25th of December 2014.
