Today’s Rosary: The Joyful Mystery

SAINT BARTHOLOMEW, AP. FEAST)
One of the Twelve, Bartholomew was from Cana in Galilee. Because the lists of the Twelve Apostles differ from one evangelist to another, he is usually identified with the Nathanael described in the Fourth Gospel. Tradition holds that after Pentecost, he preached the Gospel in Armenia, and suffered martyrdom there.

Entrance Antiphon cf. Ps96:2-3
Proclaim the salvation of God day by day; tell among the nations his glory.

Collect
Strengthen in us, O Lord, the faith by which the blessed Apostle Bartholomew clung whole heartedly to your Son, and grant that through the help of his prayers your Church may become for all the nations the sacrament of salvation. Through our Lord. . .

FIRST READING
A reading from the Book of Revelation (Revelation 21:9b-14)
On the foundations the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

An angel spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” And in the Spirit he carried me away to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed; on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps145:10-11.12-13ab.17-18 (R. see 12a)
R. Your saints, O Lord, make known the glory of your reign.

All your works shall thank you, O Lord,
and all your faithful ones bless you.
They shall speak of the glory of your reign,
and declare your mighty deeds. R.

To make known your might to the children of men,
and the glorious splendour of your reign.
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom;
your rule endures for all generations. R.

The Lord is just in all his ways,
and holy in all his deeds.
The Lord is close to all who call him,
who call on him in truth. R.

ALLELUIA John 1:49 b
Alleluia. Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel! Alleluia.

GOSPEL
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John (John 1:45-51)
Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

At that time: Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!” Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Today's Reflection

From the Gospel we can make a presumption of the kind of character St Bartholomew is. He is a straightforward person, who says what he means what he says. We can make that presumption when he queries: “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Nonetheless, he is an open person because he follows Philip to see who Jesus is. Jesus in effect also confirms the character of Bartholomew by attesting that he noticed him under the fig tree. It is like he knows what kind of person Bartholomew really is similarly, Jesus also knows each of us through and through and he also wants to affirm our goodness. Like Bartholomew, let us continue to follow Jesus as he reveal himself to us.

LITURGICAL MASS READINGS FOR JULY 25TH 2019

THURSDAY OF THE SIXTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME; YEAR 1. FEAST OF ST. JAMES, APOSTLE.

FIRST READING
2 CORINTHIANS 4:7-15

Brothers and sisters: We hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body. For we who live are constantly being given up to death for the sake of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since, then, we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, I believed, therefore I spoke, we too believe and therefore speak, knowing that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and place us with you in his presence. Everything indeed is for you, so that the grace bestowed in abundance on more and more people may cause the thanksgiving to overflow for the glory of God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM
PSALM 126:1BC-2AB, 2CD-3, 4-5, 6

R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.

When the LORD brought back the captives of Zion, we were like men dreaming. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with rejoicing.

R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.

Then they said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.” The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad indeed.

R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.

Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like the torrents in the southern desert. Those that sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.

R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.

Although they go forth weeping, carrying the seed to be sown, They shall come back rejoicing, carrying their sheaves.

R. Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
JOHN 15:16

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
I chose you from the world, to go and bear fruit that will last, says the Lord.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

*GOSPEL*
*MATTHEW 20:20-28*

The mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sons and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something. He said to her, “What do you wish?” She answered him, “Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and the other at your left, in your Kingdom.” Jesus said in reply, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?” They said to him, “We can.” He replied, “My chalice you will indeed drink, but to sit at my right and at my left, this is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” When the ten heard this, they became indignant at the two brothers. But Jesus summoned them and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”"

*The Gospel of the Lord.*

*TODAY'S REFLECTION*

“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles Lord it over them”.
Why humans seek power? With power comes influence. With influence comes relevance. Just nearly all humans want to remain relevant. It didn’t come surprising to Jesus when the mother of James and john brought her two sons to him in order to occupy seats of power. Jesus uses that opportunity to call the attention of his apostles to the mundane pursuit of power which is not for the purpose of the kingdom. We exercise power at different levels of our existence. We are not to follow the world in the existence of our power.

MASS READING FOR JULY 15, 2019

MONDAY OF THE FIFTEENTH (15TH) WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
Memorial of St. Bonaventure
LECTIONARY 389

FIRST READING
Exodus 1:8-14, 22

A new king, who knew nothing of Joseph, came to power in Egypt. He said to his subjects, “Look how numerous and powerful the people of the children of Israel are growing, more so than we ourselves! Come, let us deal shrewdly with them to stop their increase; otherwise, in time of war they too may join our enemies to fight against us, and so leave our country.”

Accordingly, taskmasters were set over the children of Israel to oppress them with forced labor. Thus they had to build for Pharaoh the supply cities of Pithom and Raamses. Yet the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread. The Egyptians, then, dreaded the children of Israel and reduced them to cruel slavery, making life bitter for them with hard work in mortar and brick and all kinds of field workBthe whole cruel fate of slaves.

Pharaoh then commanded all his subjects, “Throw into the river every boy that is born to the Hebrews, but you may let all the girls live.”

RESPONSORIAL PSALM
Psalm 124:1b-3, 4-6, 7-8

R. (8a) Our help is in the name of the Lord.

Had not the LORD been with us– let Israel say, had not the LORD been with us– When men rose up against us, then would they have swallowed us alive, When their fury was inflamed against us.

R. Our help is in the name of the Lord.

Then would the waters have overwhelmed us; The torrent would have swept over us; over us then would have swept the raging waters. Blessed be the LORD, who did not leave us a prey to their teeth.

R. Our help is in the name of the Lord.

We were rescued like a bird from the fowlers’ snare; Broken was the snare, and we were freed. Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

R. Our help is in the name of the Lord.

ALLELUIA
Matthew 5:10

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

HOLY GOSPEL
Matthew 10:34C11:1

Jesus said to his Apostles:
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one’s enemies will be those of his household.

“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

“Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is righteous will receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because he is a disciple– amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.”

When Jesus finished giving these commands to his Twelve disciples, he went away from that place to teach and to preach in their towns.

The Gospel of the Lord.

FIRST READING
A reading from the Book of Genesis (Genesis 44: l8-21.23b-29; 45: 1-5)
“God sent me before you to preserve life,”

In those days: Judah went up to Joseph and said, “O my lord, let your servant, I beg you, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not your anger burn against your servant; for you are like Pharaoh himself. My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father, or a brother?’ And we said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a young brother, the child of his old age; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother’s children; and his father loves him.’ Then you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes upon him. Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall see my face no more.’ When we went back to your servant my father we told him the words of my lord. And when our father said, ‘Go again, buy us a little food,’ we said, ‘We cannot go down. If our youngest brother goes with us, then we will go down; for we cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’ Then your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons; one left me, and I said, Surely he has been torn to pieces; and I have never seen him since. If you take this one also from me, and harm befalls him, you will bring down my grey hairs in sorrow to Sheol.”’ Then Joseph could not control himself before all those who stood by him; and he cried, “Make every one go out from me.” So no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers. And he wept aloud, so that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it. And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph; is my father still alive?” But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed at his presence. So Joseph said to his brothers, “Come near to me, I beg you.” And they came near. And he said, “I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. And now do not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.”

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 105:16-17.18-19.20-21 (R. 5a)
R. Remember the wonders the Lord has done.
Or: Alleluia.

But he called down a famine on the land;
he broke their staff of bread.
He had sent a man ahead of them,
Joseph, sold as a slave. R.

His feet were weighed down in chains,
his neck was bound with iron,
until what he said came to pass,
and the word of the Lord proved him true. R.

Then the king sent orders and released him;
the ruler of the peoples set him free.
He made him master of his house
and ruler of all his possessions. R.

ALLELUIA Mark 1: 15
Alleluia. The kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the Gospel. Alleluia.

GOSPEL
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (Matthew 10:7—15)
“You received without pay, give without pay.”

At that time: Jesus said to his apostles, “Preach as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without pay, give without pay. Take no gold, nor silver, nor copper in your belts, no bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor a staff; for the labourer deserves his food. And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it, and stay with him until you depart. As you enter the house, salute it. And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. And if any one will not receive you or listen to. your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town. Truly, I say to you, it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgement for the land of S***m and Gomorrah than for that town.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Today’s Reflection

The great apostle Paul asks: “What have we that was not given us?” Developing the attitude to reach out to others without expecting any favours in return is the best expression of Christianity. We should do our work daily not because of what we expect to get from it, but because we rejoice at what we are able to give to others through the service we render. This is called poverty of spirit. It liberates us from greed and preoccupation with material possessions. It enables us to be dependent on God. In a world driven by craving for wealth, where people do unimaginable things, God calls us to depend on Him.

Today’s Saint and Quote

St. Benedict of Nursia – July 11th
He who labors as he prays lifts his heart to God with his hands.

Whenever you begin any good work you should first of all make a most pressing appeal to Christ our Lord to bring it to perfection.

Personal Devotional

“Do not store up riches for yourselves here on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and robbers beak in and steal. Instead, store up riches for yourselves in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy. Matt. 6:19

- I renounce every worldly attachment, soul-tie in the name of Jesus Christ.

- Father, I humbly ask that you grant me the grace of unshakable faith in you, in Jesus name

Let Us Pray
In Psalm 34:18, the scripture says, “The Lord is near to those who are discouraged and saves those who have lost all hope.” Father, come to my aid concerning the following (mention them)

And grant me your grace, give me a heart to be charitable around me as I lay up treasure for myself in heaven.
