*Today's Devotion*
*Topic: Let It Rain*
*Text: James 5: 16b- 18*
_The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. 17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops._ Amen
Those who pray and expect instant results must just not give up or lose faith. For persistence in prayer surely has its rewards. Like the widow who worried the king that neither feared God and man, with her persistence until her request was granted (Luke 18:1-8), we need not throw in the towel and feel pity for ourselves. We keep trusting until victory is ours.
Now you know how prophet Elijah declared it was not to rain in Israel, and for three and half years, the clouds never gathered. One day, he declared to the king to hurry home, it was going to rain. Well, if he (Elijah) had also gone home to sleep, those words would have fallen on the ground. Rather, this is what He did:
_He ".... said to Ahab, “Go get something to eat and drink, for I hear a mighty rainstorm coming!” 42 So Ahab went to eat and drink. But Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel and bowed low to the ground and prayed with his face between his knees. 43 Then he said to his servant, “Go and look out toward the sea.” The servant went and looked, then returned to Elijah and said, “I didn’t see anything.”_
_Seven times Elijah told him to go and look. 44 Finally the seventh time, his servant told him, “I saw a little cloud about the size of a man’s hand rising from the sea.” Then Elijah shouted, “Hurry to Ahab and tell him, ‘Climb into your chariot and go back home. If you don’t hurry, the rain will stop you!’”_
_45 And soon the sky was black with clouds. A heavy wind brought a terrific rainstorm, and Ahab left quickly for Jezreel. 46 Then the Lord gave special strength to Elijah. He tucked his cloak into his belt and ran ahead of Ahab’s chariot all the way to the entrance of Jezreel."_ (1 Kings 18:41-19: 8).
Beloved, see how no rain, led to the expectation of a rainstorm, which led to intense prayers, and after a while, led to clouds the size of a human, more prayers infused, now made that small sized cloud become a terrific rainstorm. God is willing and ready, but are we thirsty enough for the rains?
Now, if Elijah, being like us, prayed for the rains to come, why is your ground dry and cracked? Why are your crops dying of thirst and your livestock, too? Why are you all parched and about to give up? Meditate on this and begin to pray. _"Ask the LORD for rain in the springtime; it is the LORD who sends the thunderstorms. He gives showers of rain to all people, and plants of the field to everyone."_ (Zechariah 10: 1).
If your prayers wouldn't end here, but will keep going, then expect God. However if, in addition to that, you will make it fervent, while you keep your heart right with God, then _"The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of His bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none."_ (Deuteronomy 28: 12). You will be filled forever, IN JESUS MIGHTY NAME! Amen.
