Topic: Conscience 703
Prayer: Heavenly Father, may we not be deceived into yielding to fears of unbelief but trust in the fidelity of Your faithfulness to deliver.
Note: Jonah 3:5, "So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them." The mention of Hittites on the list had far-reaching effects on the emotional state and mental stability of the people. Hittite meant terror. Anything related to terror has an impact not only on the human emotions and mental state, but also leads to irrational and exaggerated fears that may have no basis on reason and logic.
The threat of terror to the fledgling nation was intended to destabilise their emotional and mental states into despair and depression. It was a wicked ploy by the ten spies who didn't understand the full dimensions of what they were doing. They might have had their parochial interests in pursuing that misguided line as disinterested parties in the fight for what God had promised them. But pursuing a grand agenda to infect the rest of the nation with their fears was what did the damage to Israel.
It's natural for humans to become terrified with the prospect of death at the sheer possibility of an act of terror. The spirit of terror has a way of dramatically altering the lifestyle of people and their way of life. The terror spirit can destroy the dreams and aspirations of any nation or group of people. It has the capacity to infiltrate the emotional and mental states of people, resulting in weird dreams and nightmares that have no basis in rationality. The quality of life of the people will be greatly affected for a long time at the threat of the Hittites.
The damage that was caused to Israel was immense. Aside the immediate discouragement and the flight of their hopes and aspirations, the mention of this frightening prospect succeeded in causing the people to lose hope in their leaders and in Yahweh, as they rose up against Moses and God. Any action, ideology, hypothesis, ideas, philosophical proposition or political influence that seeks to cause disaffection among people and to bring them into confrontation with God, will not only backfire in the end, but will lead to grave consequences of death and destruction as it happened to the ten spies and the Israelites.
Food for thought: It's more useful to provoke God by our faith instead of provoking Him with our fears of unbelief.
Declaration: And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them? Numbers 14:11
