WE FOLLOW JESUS AT A COST - COUNTING THE COST
Matthew 8:18-20; 16:24; Luke 14:27-33
18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
"Large crowds were following Jesus" ...... and they always did; they followed Him in the cities, they followed Him in the towns and villages, and they followed Him on the highways - even today many are following Him everywhere, but it is important to note that Jesus never was interested in the large crowds. He severally made it plain to those who followed Him that His interest was not in the large numbers but rather made it plain that, the crowds? Yes, but there is also the reality of a cost to count.
In our main text, the large crowds were there again and a man was there who expressed his desire to follow Jesus as he put it "wherever he will go".
The man who wanted to follow.
>>He could be sincere or not.
(Among the followers of Jesus there are always the sincere and the insincere.) Which one are you?
>>The man, being himself a teacher, a religious person, a clergy, maybe a rich person, could have a motive that could be wrong and Jesus might have known so he showed him the realities of following.
Motives of following Jesus should always be right from LEADING to FOLLOWING. What is your motive, what is my motive for following Jesus?
>>Our motive will always determine our sincerity. Our motives should be right or we fail from the start. God is very interested in our motives. See Prov. 16:2
Jesus does not reject any who wants to follow but will always show and insist on the realities of following. Remember Matt. 16:24?
So he turned to the teacher who wants to become a follower - Man??? if it is for luxury, if it is for comfort, if it is for riches, if it is for fame, if it is for any good thing of this world then, LISTEN! I want you to know that....... FOXES HAVE HOLES AND BIRDS OF THE AIR HAVE NESTS, BUT THE SON OF MAN HAS NOWHERE.... TO.... LAY.... HIS.... HEAD!!! DO YOU STILL WANT TO FOLLOW?
THERE IS A COST TO COUNT AND EVERY PROSPECTIVE FOLLOWER HAS TO COUNT BEFORE MAKING A DECISION TO FOLLOW.
This is something we have always left out or change as we go out to make disciples or followers for Christ. Christ did not do it that way! See same thing at Luke 9:57-62. Following Christ is not supposed to be easy but it is rewarding.
The Cost of Being a Disciple
Jesus teaches us how to count the cost in Luke 14:25 - 33
"25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. 27 And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. 28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? 29 For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, 30 saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple."
From the above we can learn that:
>> Following Christ (sincerely) may cost us our family. Are we ready for that?
>> Following Christ (sincerely) may cost us our friends. Are we ready for that?
>> Following Christ (sincerely) may cost us our dignity. Are we ready for that?
>> Following Christ (sincerely) may cost us our comfort and wealth. Are we ready for that?
>> Following Christ (sincerely) may even cost us our lives. Are we ready for that?
Oftentimes we do not consider any of these but it is right there in scripture from the mouth of Jesus.
What to do
* We sit down
* We ponder over the cost
* Are we ready to pay the price?
* Will we be able to endure to the end?
When we have answered these questions, we may decide to follow or not.
Following Christ is not a fun fair. It is a costly endeavour but also very rewarding.
Count the cost today, are you still interested? Weigh the cost against the reward. What is the reward? (Read Matt 19:28,29; Rev. 21:1-7)
Do you want to continue?
Following Christ may be costly but very rewarding. Count the cost. Yes let's do, but let us also consider the reward and the prize and let our decision be good.
Let's read Romans 8:15 - 18. "For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory."
The reward is there: "heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ" but the cost must be counted and the price paid. It says, "if indeed (some other version say PROVIDED) we share in His suffering."
God bless you all.
