*Themeđź“–*: Foundations of Our Walk: Laying Up Treasures
Jesus does not give us instructions just to be followed, but rather to demonstrate how high his standards are and how we fall short in our own strength. This is a challenge for us to run to Jesus for us to receive empowerment. For instance, as we learnt previously, our prayers should not only be founded on our needs but also on worship and appreciation to God.
In Matthew 6:19 to 34, we see Jesus contrasting several situations. A treasure is something we hold dearly and value, usually kept safely and in secured places. “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal (Matthew 6:19). Jesus compared building our treasures for ourselves on earth and laying up treasures in heaven. He also went on to compare how the treasures are safe when in heaven but are degradable and can be stolen when on earth.
*How do we get our treasures in heaven?*
In 1 Timothy 6:17-19, Paul described how we can get our treasures in heaven. “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life” (1 Timothy 6:18-19). For instance, when God blesses us with resources through contracts, employment and other means we should connect some of these resources to the salvation of others. In doing this, their salvation becomes our treasure in heaven. We can sponsor crusades, discipleship and salvation of people regardless of the amount of resources that come to us.
In Luke 16:9, the Parable of the dishonest manager, one key lesson is to use our worldly resources to benefit others and make friends, so that when our earthly possessions are gone, we will have another one in our eternal home. We must commit our resources to helping others so that they make it to heaven. We can do this by prioritizing contributions to outreaches and missions.
Where your treasure is, that’s where your heart is (Matthew 6:19). The reason why we mostly lose touch of this principle is that, we are so earthly consumed making us forget that we are pilgrims on earth with a destination we are heading to.
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”(Matthew 6:22-23). Jesus admonishes us to allow our eyes to be single, implying that we should allow our eyes remain on our permanent destination, Heaven, even as we try to achieve success on this earth. Unfortunately, we start losing sight of our permanent destination when we start becoming successful. Regardless of the blessings God gives us, we should keep our eyes fixed and single on making Jesus known. If your eyes are fixed on Heaven and not earth, it changes the way you look at things. It always sounds a caution to you when you are tempted to do the wrong thing.
*Prayer*
Our Heavenly Father, we are grateful for the opportunity to share your word again. We ask that you help us to lay our treasures in heaven and not on earth. May our lives on earth continue to draw others to salvation. We ask that you grant us help that will cause us to please you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
