DID JESUS LIVE AND FULFILL THE OLD COVENANT?
Remember we have previously studied the division of the bible categorized into
1. The book of Moses including the law i.e. Genesis to Deuteronomy
2. The writings i.e. Joshua to songs of Solomon
3. The prophets i.e.ar
These three were known then as the scriptures, so you often hear you have heard from the scriptures
4. The Gospel i.e. Mathew to John
5. The Acts of the apostle
6. The Epistles
7. And Revelation
When Jesus made the declaration that he did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it what he meant was to fulfill all the types and shadows of the law that concerns him until this is understood you will struggle understanding the New Testament ministry.
Matthew 5:17-18 KJVS
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. [18] For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
In another version it is beautifully put as follows
“If you think I’ve come to set aside the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets, you’re mistaken. I have come to fulfill and bring to perfection all that has been written. Indeed, I assure you, as long as heaven and earth endure, not even the smallest detail of the Law will be done away with until its purpose is complete.
Matthew 5:17-18 TPT
On the road to Emmaus after the resurrection of Jesus this is the conversation with the three people on the road throwing light on this fulfillment.
Luke 24:23-34 KJVS
And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. [24] And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not. [25] Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: [26] Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? [27] And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. [28] And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. [29] But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. [30] And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it , and brake, and gave to them. [31] And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. [32] And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? [33] And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, [34] Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
Remember in the Old Testament animal sacrifice was used as a temporal relief until God himself will one day provide the perfect lamb to restore man back to fellowship with God
John 1:29 KJVS
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
The very next day John saw Jesus coming to him to be baptized, and John cried out, “Look! There he is—God’s Lamb! He will take away the sins of the world!
John 1:29 TPT
So the old testament in effect was like a schooh master or gateway to the real world of faith
Why then was the law given? It was meant to be an intermediary agreement added after God gave the promise of the coming One! It was given to show men how guilty they are, and it remained in force until the Seed was born to fulfill the promises given to Abraham. When God gave the law, he didn’t give it to them directly, for he gave it first to the angels; they gave it to Moses , his mediator, who then gave it to the people. Now, a mediator does not represent just one party alone, but God fulfilled it all by himself! Since that’s true, should we consider the written law to be contrary to the promise of new life? How absurd! Truly, if there was a law that we could keep which would give us new life, then our salvation would have come by law-keeping. But the Scriptures make it clear that since we were all under the power of sin, we needed Jesus! And he is the Savior who brings the promise to those who believe. So until the revelation of faith for salvation was released, the law was a jailer, holding us as prisoners under lock and key until the “faith,” which was destined to be revealed, would set us free . The law becomes a gateway to lead us to the Messiah so that we would be saved by faith. But when faith comes the law is no longer in force, since we have already entered into life. You have all become true children of God by faith in Jesus the Anointed One! It was faith that immersed you into Jesus, the Anointed One, and now you are covered and clothed with his anointing. And we no longer see each other in our former state—Jew or non-Jew, rich or poor, male or female—because we’re all one through our union with Jesus Christ with no distinction between us . And since you’ve been united to Jesus the Messiah, you are now Abraham’s “child” and inherit all the promises of the kingdom realm!
Galatians 3:19-29 TPT
To be continued.
