If God is loving, why didn't He just forgive sin without Jesus' sacrifice?

God's love and justice go hand in hand. While He desires to forgive, He also upholds justice. Jesus' sacrifice was the ultimate expression of both:
• Forgiveness requires a cost, and Jesus paid that cost
• His death satisfied God's justice while showing His mercy
• Through Jesus, God demonstrated His love for humanity
• His sacrifice allows us to be restored without compromising divine justice

I read of the Tabernacle, the Temple, and so many of the institutions of the Old Testament, and they are impressive even in themselves. But they are nothing compared to your Son, O my Father! He is the substance and reality of all of these former things. They were but faint shadows and signposts pointing to the One who was to come. May I see your Son when I read of these things in your Word?

But far greater than the Temple is Jesus Christ, to whom that Temple pointed, being a shadow of him and his sacrifice to be made for sin.
