*Tamale Sacred Heart Parish Celebrates Mother’s Day*

Story by Lucky Atariyine Ayine-Etigo

On 10th May, 2026, Sacred Heart Parish, Tamale, celebrated this year’s Mother’s Day as parishioners gathered during Mass to honour the love, resilience, and dedication of mothers.

The celebration was preceded by a two-day rehearsal to prepare mothers and adult ladies to actively participate in the Mass during which they took up roles as choristers, Mass servers, lectors and ushers.

They also led parishioners during bidding prayers, and took charge in taking the day’s offertory collections, and also brought and presented offertory gifts amidst singing and dancing.

The various societies also turned out in their colourful cloth uniforms, adding splendour and vibrancy to the celebration.

The celebration was further enriched with messages of appreciation by Sunday school children, and sale of handkerchiefs inscribed with “Happy Mother’s Day” messages.

This initiative was to raise funds for the Council of Catholic Women which organised the event, amid captivating dance performances with a rendition of the popular 1974 highlife song by Prince Nico Mbarga “Sweet Mother”, sang by the choir.

Rev. Fr. Anthony Santah a Curate of the parish celebrated the Mass, assisted by Rev. Eric Maaltachi a Deacon.

In a homily, Fr. Santah congratulated all mothers for their invaluable contributions to their family, the Church, and society, emphasising that their sacrifices, love, and commitment remain deeply appreciated.

The celebration ended with a group photography session.

Tamale Blessed Sacrament Chaplaincy Celebrates Mothers On Mother's Day

Story by Gladys Ayinpoka Atanga

On May 10, 2026, Blessed Sacrament Chaplaincy, Tamale, celebrated mothers and all mother-figures on the occasion of Mother’s Day during Holy Mass.

The Curate, Rev. Fr. Anthony Frimpong who celebrated the Mass, prayed for God's blessings upon mothers who are mourning, sick, as well as those facing challenging times.

Prayers were also said for mothers who have been hurt by their children and find it difficult to forgive them, and parishioners mourning the loss of their mothers, as well as women desiring the blessing of motherhood.

Reflecting on the importance of Mother’s Day, Fr. Frimpong focused his homily on mothers who have lost their children, and those who have been abandoned by their children.

He commended women who act as mother-figures to children who are not their biologically children, and entreated parishioners whose relationships with their mothers are strained to use the occasion to pursue the path of reconciliation and restore peace in their families.

As the Catholic Church prepares to celebrate the feast of Pentecost, he urged parishioners to remember the importance of adhering to the two fundamental Commandments of love of God, and love of their neighbour.

To mark the occasion, the President of the Council of Catholic Women (CCW) Madam Edith Dakogri, paid tribute to grandmothers, mothers, aunties, and sisters for their devotion, compassion, and sacrifices for their families and the community.

She told mothers that their efforts will not be in vain, assuring them that God is always with them, providing the necessary support to enable them carry out their responsibilities.

She portrayed women as real-life representation of Christ’s love, demonstrated through their compassion and dedication to others and lauded them for their sacrifices every day.

Drawing inspiration from the Blessed Virgin Mary, prayers were offered for all mothers for grace, wisdom, and strength in their motherhood journey. They were also encouraged to continue shining in their homes, communities, and society through love and example.

In support of women and mothers in the Church, Dr. Collins Dapaah, a member of the Technical Committee, led parishioners in a fundraising drive to support the activities of the CCW.

Male parishioners supported the initiative by purchasing CCW-branded handkerchiefs for all women.

Tamale Archdiocese Climaxes Easter Festivities With A Picnic
Story By: Francis E. Monnie, CAMP-G

On 6th April 2026, the Tamale Archdiocese climaxed its Easter festivities with a Picnic at the 6 Battalion Infantry (6BN), Kamina Barracks, Tamale. It was under the theme, "Do Not Be Afraid. Go and Proclaim the Resurrection" (Matthew 28:10).

The event attracted tens of hundreds of revelers comprising Catholics and people of other faiths. It was characterised by cultural dances and displays, fun and indoor games, horse riding, song ministration, among others, creating a platform for unity in religious diversity.

Some telecommunication and insurance companies, as well as small businesses, were present to promote their products and services. Also present were food and vendors of assorted wares and products, creating a lively and festive atmosphere at the picnic grounds.

The event is organised annually on a rotational basis. Saints Peter and Paul organised this year's celebration, with St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Parish taking over the baton in 2027.

The picnic was preceded by the celebration of Mass at the forecourt of Our Lady of Fatima Parish presided by Very Rev. Fr. Hilary Pogbeyir, the Vicar General. It was concelebrated by Most Rev. Philip Naameh, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale and 27 priests.

Very Rev. Fr. Pogbeyir focused his homily on the resurrection of Jesus Christ, urging Christians to uphold and practice the virtue of truth in their daily lives.

To this end, he called on them to emulate the example of the women led by Mary Magdalene who were the first to witness the resurrection of Christ. He observed that they gave a true narration of what they saw to His disciples when they visited His tomb.

In this regard, he advised husbands and wives to be truthful to each other in their marriage.

Earlier, the newly appointed Commanding Officer of 6BN, Lt. Col. Edward Lumor, was introduced to the congregation by the Parish Parish, Rev. Fr. Captian Dominic Prince Yeboah after which the Archbishop prayed for and blessed him and the wife and Children.

The Archbishop also gave the final Blessing.

Tamale St. Lucy Catholic Hospital To Get 40-bed Maternity Block
Story By: Francis E. Monnie, CAMP-G

On 26th March, 2026, a ceremony was held to break the ground for the construction of a 40-bed maternity block for St. Lucy Catholic Hospital at Kpalsi, Tamale.

The project seeks to double the capacity of the existing maternity block from 40-bed to 80-bed to address the infrastructure challenges of the facility in the area of maternal and child health care.

The contractor Othniel Limited, who is also the financier of the project, is expected to mobilise to site and begin work in two weeks, and complete the project in 12 months.

Under the terms of the contract, the contractor/financier is to be reimbursed the contract sum of the project ten years after it is completed and put to use.

Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony, Mr. Felix Gandaa, the Consultant, promised to ensure that work is executed according to specification.

He, however, cautioned against actions such as giving instructions the constructor on site that could lead to cost overruns. He, therefore, appealed to stakeholders to channel any concerns through him for redress.

The contract for the project had earlier been signed at the conference hall of the Catholic secretariat in Tamale by the parties to the contract, namely, Tamale Archdiocesan Development Organisation (TADO) and Othniel Limited.

The ceremony took place in the presence of board members and management of the hospital, representatives of the Chief of Kpalsi, the Assembly Member of the area, the Consultant, and members of the Finance and Estate and Building Committees of the Archdiocese.

In a welcome address, Rev. Fr. Sebastian Zaato, the Coordinator of TADO, said the presence of stakeholders is not only an honour to his organisation, but represent a share in their sacred mission to serve life, to protect motherhood, and to care for the most vulnerable.

He disclosed that the journey to build a modern, decent maternity block for the hospital began long ago. However, he lamented that several attempts to secure grants or even loans at reasonable interest rates proved difficult until Othniel Limited agreed to take up the responsibility after long and difficult negotiations.
Commenting on the occasion, Fr. Zaato said it represents a milestone that embodies TADO’s commitment to faith, compassion, and excellence in healthcare.

Underscoring the importance of the project, he said, “This project is not merely about bricks and mortar; it is about building a sanctuary where mothers will be cared for with dignity, where children will be welcomed into the world safely, and where families will find support in moments of vulnerability, and indeed where health care in general to the populace will be delivered with a touch of humanness”, he declared.

He said the maternity block has its roots in the healing ministry of Christ, expressing optimism that it will stand as a beacon of love and service.

“It will remind us that every mother and child is a precious gift from God, deserving of the highest quality care and the deepest compassion”, he added.

Fr. Zaato paid tribute to the hard-working staff of the hospital, but reminded them of their obligations towards fulfilling the terms of the contract.

“After this, the ball would be in your court to ensure that we repay this loan in the next ten years. That is a daunting task, but not insurmountable”, he said.

He added, “We have had a few discussions in our quest to carry you along this whole process, so you understand what the task is and how we intend to get there”.

He, therefore, charged them to work hard to avoid a default on the agreement, cautioning that the consequences would be dire if this happens. Also, he said such a situation would bring disgrace unto the Archbishop Most Rev. Philip Naameh, and the Archdiocese.

Other speeches delivered by the Vicar General Very Rev. Fr. Hilary Pogbeyir on behalf of the Archbishop and by Sir Cosmas Alhassan, Chairman of the hospital’s board who also chaired the signing ceremony, also urged the management and staff of the hospital to work diligently.

The Administrator of the hospital Madam Cynthia Lamisi Anaba in a speech, also emphasised the importance of the project to the hospital.

“The construction of a maternity block represents hope – hope for safer deliveries, improved maternal and newborn outcomes, and dignity for every woman and child who walks through their doors, she stated.

She added, “The sod cutting not only symbolises the beginning of construction, but the beginning of a new chapter in our service deliver – one that prioritises quality, accessibility and compassionate care”.

Collaboration among stakeholders was stressed as key to ensuring the successful completion of the project. A representative of the Chief of Kpalsi pledged their support in this regard.

Mr. Jude Robert Kwapong, Director and Chief Operating Officer of Othniel Limited, promised to complete and hand over the project on schedule.
